Colton Smith enjoyed something of a charmed life on Season 15 of The Voice.
He lost his battle round match with Patrique Fortson, but was saved because Blake Shelton was so impressed with Colton’s cover of his song, “God Gave Me You.”
He lost again in the knockout round. This time he was saved by Jennifer Hudson, his original voice coach.
His Voice journey ended in the live playoffs, but now Colton is planning new original music for all his old fans and the new ones he gained from the show.
Here’s what Colton, 21 when he auditioned, told Voice Views about his time on the show and his plans moving forward,
Voice Views: Where do you see The Voice experience leading you musically? What are your musical goals / aspirations now?
Colton: My journey on The Voice taught me so much about myself as an artist. Moving forward, I want to let my fans into my mind and my heart by releasing a bunch of original music. I have been writing music and poetry since as early as the second grade. I’m excited to share that side of me with the world. I also am very passionate about theatre, so I would love to audition for some things and hopefully get the opportunity to explore that passion.
Voice Views: Do you envision releasing new music soon? If so, can you tell me about that? Either what you have planned or what you’d like to do? And what sound fans can expect?
Colton: I have lots of exciting things coming up very very soon. An album full of songs about heartbreak and breakups is in the works right now. I write songs from a very vulnerable place, taking my own personal experiences and articulating them in a way that is (hopefully) intriguing and relatable. Fans can expect to really hear the authentic Colton Smith.
Voice Views: Which was your favorite Voice performance and why?
Colton: I really loved my experience during the battle round. Patrique quickly became one of my very best friends. There was so much mutual support and respect. He was so much fun to work with. I also loved putting my own spin on “Scared to Be Lonely” in the Live Playoffs.
Voice Views: Is there anything else you’d like to add about The Voice experience?
Colton: I loved getting to represent the LGBTQ+ community on television. We as a community need more mainstream representation and I was elated to be even a small part of putting that in motion. I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything.
