Season 7 American Idol winner David Cook made a triumphant return to the Idol stage Thursday night, belting out his new single, “Laying Me Low.”

It turned out to be the musical highlight on a night that also included guest appearances by Will.i.am and Harry Connick Jr.

David’s new song hit iTunes today, and it’s the first single he has released since splitting with RCA records about a year ago.

I loved the hand-clap bit near the end of the song.

And I can’t wait to hear what David can do now that he’s out on his own.

Here’s betting his new music shows a little more diversity, creativity and originality than his last album.

Not that 2011’s “This Loud Morning” was by any means a bad album. It’s just that most of the songs built to the same bombastic chorus and there weren’t enough change-of-pace tracks.

From the guy who surprised us again and again with his unique renditions of cover songs on Idol.

Of course, there’s never been a problem with David’s voice.

In fact, because he’s a rocker, I’ve often felt he doesn’t get enough credit for his vocal ability.

I’ve seen him in concert twice. The guy can flat-out sing.

As for the new music, we might be waiting a while.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, David has this to say: “I would love to be putting a record together sooner rather than later. We’re just trying to find a home for it — whether it’s major or DIY (do it yourself), but I think we have a pocket of six or seven songs that are great material. I feel confident that someone is going to want to put it out.”

The sooner the better.

Great article- I love David Cook. I was happy for David when they parted ways- he is better than they deserve. He is clearly happier too. One little comment about his previous albums- the best songs weren’t release or they were bonus tracks FYI – not that there was anything wrong with what was released just that there was better or comfortable left only to hear live or you own the albums
