David Cook, New Idol Music

David Cook’s ‘This Loud Morning’ departs with a whimper

3

That loud thud you just heard was David Cook’s new album, dropping out of the Billboard 200 after only eight weeks.

Ouch.

I mean, that’s an awfully cool reception for a new release from a guy whose post-Idol debut went platinum (1,000,000 copies sold) in nearly the same amount of time.

According to USA Today, “This Loud Morning” has sold about 86,000 copies. The album debuted at number seven on the Billboard 200 and had been dropping quickly ever since.

The lead single, “The Last Goodbye,” never caught on. And while the album features other excellent tracks — “Goodbye to the Girl” and “We Believe” among them — the songs are too similar for the album to be wholly successful. Just my humble opinion.

No word yet on a tour to support “This Loud Morning.” David is, however, scheduled to sing the national anthem at the Kansas City Chiefs’ home opener on Sept. 12.

The flop of “This Loud Morning” leaves Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood and, perhaps, Fantasia as the only Idol winners to show any staying power on the music charts beyond a debut album.

David’s self-titled post-Idol debut had been the last truly successful first release from an Idol champ It featured two singles that cracked Billboard’s Hot 100, plus his Idol coronation song, “Time of My Life,” which made it to number three before the album was released.

And who knows? If a future single clicks, maybe we haven’t heard the last from “This Loud Morning.” I’m always rooting the grads from Idol’s superb season seven cast.

I think you can put Jordin Sparks in the category of second album successful artists, remembering that she is a singles artist. I think there are three tears of sophmore idol discs: the kellys and carries, the jordins and fantasias, and the male idol winners

David Cook and Gavin DeGraw have both confirmed a Co-Headlining tour together this fall, October and part of November, as of Thursday, August 25.

Clues have been everywhere since August 17th, waiting for official confirmation. Now just waiting for specific concert dates and locations, expected within a week.

Oh, it’s a little early yet to dismiss Mr. Cook. He’s just announced a co-headlining tour for early fall and a second single is about to be released. This Loud Morning is a great album full of well-crafted music that will build a, appreciative, larger following– maybe not with the speed of some radio-friendly pop artists’ albums, but it will have its day.
    Thank you
