Gracee Shriver scored a bit of an upset during the battle round on The Voice Season 17.
Just 16, Gracee won her battle match with Brennan Lassiter, a talented singer who turned four chairs in the blind auditions.
Coach Kelly Clarkson had the duo sing “Blue Ain’t Your Color” by Keith Urban.
When the performance ended, she decided to advance Gracee to the knockout round; Brennan was eliminated.
Here’s what Gracee, from Owasso, Okla., told Voice Views about the battle we missed on The Voice. The show montaged the performance, so Voice viewers say just a tiny snippet of it.
Voice Views: How did you feel about the song you were given and did it pose any special challenges for you?
Gracee: I loved the song choice!! I definitely didn’t expect it to be that, but it was a pleasant surprise. I enjoy singing music more on the bluesy/country side. I think it being originally a guy song brought some challenges when it came to the low parts, but besides that, I felt like it was in my wheelhouse!
Voice Views: What type of feedback did you get from the coaches? Why do you think you prevailed in the battle?
Gracee: The coaches gave me great feedback. They all complimented my tone and said that my voice was a story-telling voice that really drew them in. They liked how I carried myself throughout the song. I am very thankful that Kelly believed in me enough to push me to the next round, my opponent did amazing and I had so much fun performing!
Voice Views: You’re now through two rounds of the competition. Is there anything in particular you’d like to showcase / get a chance to do musically in the knockouts?
Gracee: I would love to push myself a little going into the knockouts. I have always backed myself with an instrument, so pulling my guitar out for my knockout would possibly be a way I could show a new side of myself to the coaches. I am very excited for the next round!
