Granville Automatic prepares to release Civil War project

Granville Automatic album coverAbout two years ago, the gals who are Granville Automatic decided they were going to write and record a Civil War album.

We’re about to hear the results of their efforts.

Prediction: You’ll be impressed. Their last album, self-titled back in 2012, was one of the best American-Idol related releases that year.

Granville Automatic is vocalist Vanessa Olivarez, from Season 2 of American Idol, and guitarist Elizabeth Elkins.

Their new album is called “An Army Without Music” and will be out Aug. 14. You can pre-order it now through the Granville Automatic website.

Each of the nine tracks is somehow linked to a specific battle or incident from the Civil War. And Vanessa and Elizabeth were traveling to those battlefields to record videos to match the songs.

You can check out a song about the Battle of Glorieta Pass below. You’ll find videos for two other songs — “Rose of Sharon” and “Grancer Harrison” — off the upcoming album on the Granville Automatic YouTube channel.

When they’re performing as Granville Automatic, Vanessa and Elizabeth write and perform singer-songwriter, folk type music. And they most often write about history.

“The cool thing about history, is you never run out of material,” Vanessa said when I interviewed her a while back. “There are just endless stories, endless tales. And it’s nice to have things to write about that are true and actually happened instead of writing about the same love story over and over again.”

But Vanessa and Elizabeth also write songs for other artists. For instance, they were co-writers on the current single from county artist Billy Currington called “Drinkin’ Town with a Football Problem.”

And — this is pretty big news — they were recently signed to BGM’s roster.

In addition to their website, you can keep up with the talented duo on Twitter @gvilleautomatic.
