Now 19, the young woman from Placerville, Calif., has kept busy musically since then, releasing a trio of EPs, including “Happy Again” last September.
She’s now back with her first full-length album, “Feelings,” released in mid-May. And the 10-song collection features collaborations with two friends she made on The Voice — Claire DeJean and Christiana Danielle.
Here’s what Jaclyn told Voice Views about that new album.
Voice Views: How would you compare this album to the other projects you’ve released to date? I believe you had released three EPs since The Voice?
Jaclyn: I would say this project is different from my other EP’s in that I pushed myself sonically more than I have in the past. I didn’t want it to be predictable. There’s some funk, jazz, folk, and pop influences all throughout the record, and because of that I feel it’s very me.
Voice Views: I know “Feelings” is also one of the songs on the album, but why did you decide to use that as the name for the project?
Jaclyn: “Feelings” was the second completed song for the album. (Ironically, Track 10: “The End” actually was the first as it was created in early January.) But there was something so loud and obvious about “Feelings” that it was what I wanted the whole album to build off. There was never a doubt or moment of reconsideration if I should name it something else. These are always the best decisions; when you don’t ever have to think twice.
Voice Views: Can you tell me about the song “Blue Nikes,” which has a completely different vibe than the rest of the album?
Jaclyn: Blue Nikes I made as a collaboration with my good friend Timothy Brown. This was the only song I didn’t make in my own space, on my recording software, since we used Tim’s. I had a few verses going into this session and after some messing around with sounds, we got the hook. Tim is an amazing creator so you can definitely hear his uniqueness come through.
Voice Views: And two fellow former Voice contestants — Claire DeJean and Christiana Danielle — provided a vocal assist on “Drive My Heart” and “Lonely With Me,” respectively. How did that come about?
Jaclyn: Claire and Christiana were on my vision board for the album … I love them both dearly. I just knew I had to get them. I sent Claire a track we had written together in New York, and she sent back her vocal cuts. It took me weeks and weeks to finally create “Lonely With Me” for Christiana, but I do say it was worth the wait.
Voice Views: As an artist, how have you been coping during the pandemic, when it’s so difficult to promote your music with live performances?
Jaclyn: With this album being created right as the pandemic started to unfold, I was in a way forced to piece it together every single day. I would wake up, work on the album, do schoolwork, sleep, & repeat. So for the creative process, it kept me busy. For promotion, I could see how it’s being held up a bit, but truly, I just want people to enjoy the album. Not be forced to, but to take the time to let each song resonate.
Voice Views: Is there anything else you’d like to add about “Feelings”?
Jaclyn: I love to hear which tracks are the listeners’ favorite. Mine are track 2 & 9. Tell me which ones are special to you!
