James Dupre called it an experience that will be tough to top.

He was talking about The Voice battle round. More specifically, about the opportunity to rehearse “Fortunate Son” with John Fogerty, adviser for Team Adam Levine.

Fogerty wrote the song when he fronted Creedence Clearwater Revival. He shared the story about how the song came to be with James and battle round partner Dustin Monk, then helped them rearrange it for their performance.

“Hearing the story about the war and how he was drafted and the anger he felt and how he came to write that song — it was quite a moving experience,” James, 30, of Bayou Chicot, La., said during a Tuesday conference call with the media. “It will be hard to top how cool that experience was.

“I really wanted to channel that anger he felt, and the passion and emotion he felt when he wrote and performed the song. I wanted to really convey that in my performance. Hopefully, I did.”

Adam declared James the battle round winner, meaning he advances to the knockout round on The Voice. Dustin was eliminated from the competition.

James, who has been trying to jump start a country music career in Nashville, said he’s performed CCR songs before, but not “Fortunate Son,” partly because “it’s such a higher register song in a key I wasn’t comfortable in.

“You know,” he added. “Adam challenged me just exactly how I wanted him to and brought me out of my comfort zone. I’m really happy about the outcome.”

Keep checking back. I’ll be posting more recaps of battle round matches.
