And it will include: Jax, Clark Beckham, Tyanna Jones, Nick Fradiani and, unbelievably, Rayvon Owen.
I don’t write “unbelievably” because Rayvon doesn’t deserve it.
I write “unbelievably” because he just earned his fourth consecutive instant save, and the last that will be available on Season 14 of Idol.
That means Quentin Alexander is heading home, one week after good friend Joey Cook met the same fate.
I can’t help thinking the summer tour will be 40 percent less interesting than it would have been if they replaced Nick and Tyanna in the lineup.
On with the recap …
Best performance of the night: Jax took a seat beind the piano to perform Dido’s “White Flag.” And it was special. The song suited her voice perfectly. She poured her heart into the performance. Jennifer Lopez kept looking for moments in Wednesday’s show. Jax delivered.
Runner-up: Rayvon is proving the master of ballads, as Harry Connick Jr. pointed out. He was at his vocal best in round one when he performed Sam Smith’s “I’m Not the Only One.” It might have been Rayvon’s best performance to date.
Best performer of the night: Wednesday’s 12-song set included more misses than hits from what I was hearing. Jax came closest to a pair of hits, because her first round performance included more energy and attitude than some of the Top 6 were able to muster in two trips to the stage.
Worst of the night: Look, Tyanna Jones is impressive for 16. But how she is going out on tour while Joey Cook and Quentin Alexander are heading home is simply baffling. And neither of her Wednesday performances — “Party in the USA” or “Heaven” — made it one bit less baffling.
Please keep him: Idol likes its contestants to show trajectory as the show enters its final weeks. Clark Beckham’s trajectory is headed in the wrong direction. But he’s so good vocally– or at least was so good in the earlier rounds — I’m hoping he rediscovers his way next week.
Who should be in the bottom two based on Wednesday night: Clark Beckham and Tyanna Jones.
Who will be in the bottom two: Rayvon Owen and Tyanna Jones. And this time, there won’t be a save.
