The result is a song and music video called “Criminal,” released this weekend. You can check out the video below.
The serial killer is H.H. Holmes, who confessed to 27 murders, though his exact number of victims has never been verified.
But two of his first suspected victims, a mistress named Julia Smythe and her daughter Pearl, disappeared on Christmas Eve 1891.
Which makes Kat’s odd-seeming release date sorta timely.
She’s also calling it the best song she’s ever written and the best video she’s ever made, which is saying something since she has two fine post-Voice albums to her credit (2015’s “Kat Robichaud and the Darling Misfits” remains one of my all-time favorites).
As for “Criminal,” Kat writes that while the song is about Holmes “you can apply it to pretty much any emotionally or physically damaging relationship. I’ve had my share.”
The song is also featured in a production at Kat’s Misfit Caberet, an eccentric variety show she produces in San Francisco. Right now, she’s preparing for a six-night run of A Very Merry Misfit Cabaret.
Kat also has a Patreon campaign up and running. In fact, supporters got “Criminal” a while back. And they just received a new song called “King,” which Kat calls a song that “pokes fun at a certain ‘leader.’
Hmm, wonder who that could be.
Here’s the music video for “Criminal.”
