Two minutes later, she’d established herself as an artist to watch as the season progresses.
Every Voice coach turned for her soulful and sassy performance of Aretha Franklin’s “Baby I Love You.”
Katie opted to join Team Legend.
And, as it turns out, two Voice contestants you might remember had a hand in directing Katie to The Voice stage.
Here’s what Katie, 38, of Chicago, had to say about her blind audition experience.
Voice Views: How did you wind up auditioning for The Voice Season 17 and what prompted you to do it?
Katie: My friend Sarah Potenza encouraged me to audition. I told her that I didn’t think that this show was for me due to the fact that it’s a competition. Growing up I never did well in competitions for piano and flute and those experiences left a negative impression on me.
Sarah tagged me on one of my singing videos on Instagram and Luke Wade reached out and sold me on the audition. I am so very glad that I did it! It’s been the most fun experience of my life! It’s like band camp with famous people and I get to be on TV!
Voice Views: Why did you choose “Baby, I Love You” for your audition song?
Katie: I chose this song because it’s such a groovy tune! I feel like it’s the perfect song for a singer. Soft to loud, groovy, sexy full of raw emotion. I’m an emotional woman with a loud mouth and I thought that the coaches and audience would wanna get up and shake it!
Voice Views: You might say that wound up being an incredibly successful blind audition. What was the experience like?
Katie: I was super excited to audition! I got to hang with my family and knew that I was about to meet the famous 4! As soon as the red doors opened my heart started to flutter a bit but I knew that I had to look at this stage like any other stage that I had performed on….be myself! As soon as I took a big breath I felt ready to sing my heart out and I did! I couldn’t have asked for a better audition. Katie Kadan got 4 chair turns….wow!
Voice Views: And why did you did you join team legend
Katie: I chose john because I think that we can relate in style. He’s a song writer that plays piano and was raised in the church. He was a choir director and arranger and so was I. I think that there’s allot of common bonds of musicianship. I felt that we would be a good match. Hell, he also turned 1st with a big smile on his face. I had to choose him!
