Lauren Alaina entertains large crowd at the York Fair

Lauren Alaina won legions of fans on American Idol with her fun-loving personality and special voice.

And both were on display Saturday night, when she entertained a large crowd at the WGTY Great Country Radio Stage at the York Fair.

Lauren slowed her show down a couple of times — to cover one of her favorite songs, Miranda Lambert’s “The House That Built Me,” and to pull her mom on stage for an emotional rendition of “Like My Mother Does.”

But she blistered her way through most of a nine-song set that also included a version of Bon Jovi’s “Wanted Dead or Alive” and six tunes off her highly successful, self-titled debut album, released about a year ago, after she finished second on Season 10 of American Idol.

As for her fun-loving side … well, let’s see.

Lauren tossed a pair of autographed Frisbees into the crowd after fans proved they knew the name of her new single (“Eighteen Inches”), joking all the while that she had no idea how to throw a Frisbee.

She pulled two young males from the audience to dance alongside her during one crowd-pleasing number.

And she spent most of her show-closing “Georgia Peaches” prancing through the crowd, belting out the song and greeting fans.

As for those fans, some arrived as much as two hours early to grab a prime seat for what proved to be WGTY’s best-attended show so far at this year’s fair. And hundreds lined up afterward to meet Lauren and get her autograph.

Laura Cook of Dover was among the early arrivals. She said she didn’t watch that much of Season 10 of Idol, but caught Lauren in the finale and has been a fan ever since.

“Her songs are amazing,” Laura said. “She’s got a great voice. Every note is pure.”

Alyson Mucha, a Gettysburg College student from the Philly suburbs, didn’t get to hear her favorite Lauren Alaina song — “Dirt Road Prayer” — during Saturday’s show, but said she thinks the gal from Georgia absolutely should have won her season on Idol “because she’s so much better (than winner Scotty McCreery). He’s like Josh Turner part two.”

And Phoenix Fisher of Hanover says she’s a Lauren Alaina fan because of “what she stands for. She’s her own person, and she doesn’t change for anyone.”

Linda Sterner of Reading, Pa., said she wanted to sleep rather than attend the York Fair concert Saturday night. She wound up thanking her daughter, Carrie, for convincing her to do otherwise.

Her favorite part of the show?

When Lauren Alaina pulled her mom on stage to honor her while performing “Like My Mother Does.”

“That made me cry,” Linda said.

Love her and love her voice and music. Such a sweet and talented girl. She’s going to go far! I love that she so often stays hours after shows to meet fans. At CMA fest celebrity softball game, despite her busy schedule, she was one of the few (if not the only) stars to stay after in the heat for over an hour signing autographs. I heard in Canada she also signed for a few hours. I hope she never loses that!

I was at the fair and was impressed how comfortable she was at entertaining the crowd even at her young age (still only 17 years old).

At the end of her show Laurem came back in the crowd by the bleachers, my five year old grand daughter was patiently waiting to see if she would get a high five…instead she got picked up by Lauren! It was so adorable. My granddaughter laid her head on Lauren’s shoulder and hugged her. Lauren gave her a tight squeeze said a few nice words to her and put her down. What other country artist would do that!? Stay true to yourself Lauren. You are a beautiful person with an amazing voice!
