Idols on the Music Chart

Lots of publicity, no hits yet for Adam Lambert

Next up for Adam Lambert: a Tuesday appearance on Oprah.

And one has to wonder when all the hype will finally translate into success on the music charts.

I mean Adam has enjoyed more publicity than any winner of American Idol could ever hope for … and he didn’t win.

But while eveything Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga and — suddenly — Ke$ha touch turns to gold, Adam has struggled to get a song up the charts.

This week’s Billboard charts bear mixed news for the season eight runnerup.

His latest single, “Whataya Want from Me,” jumps five spots, which leaves it at a quite modest number 65 on the Hot 100. (Gaga, Taylor and Ke$ha each have three songs in the top 40.)

And his album, “For Your Entertainment,” drops four spots, from 36 to 40 on the Billboard 200.

But Adam forges on. Today marked the release of the video for “Whataya Want from Me.” (Go here to watch it.)

And I’m sure Tuesday’s appearance on Oprah will be must-see TV for the legions of Lambert fans.

Meanwhile, here’s how the rest of the Idols are doing on the music charts:

But this week, the song heads in the opposite direction, to number 33. Kris’ album continues in the same direction, dropping from 91 to 97 on the Billboard 200.

Kelly Clarkson: For the second straight week, “Already Gone” nudges forward on the Hot 100, this week moving one spot from 26 to 25. It’s also 11 on the adult contemporary chart, 12 on the pop songs chart and number one on the adult pop song chart. Kelly’s fourth album is 161 on the Billboard 200, down two spots.

Daughtry: The band’s second single off “Leave This Town” is stuck at number 56 on the Hot 100. “Life After You” lands there for the second straight week. The album is number 59, up four spots. And the band’s debut album is still on the Billboard 200 at number 179.

Allison Iraheta: The red-headed rocker’s debut album spent just five weeks on the Billboard 200. Last week, it was number 186. This week, it’s gone. Hopefully, Allison will have a single catch on and it will return.

Katharine McPhee: The now-blond Kat, runnerup in season five, released her second album last week. It lands at number 27 on the Billboard 200 this week. It’ll be interesting to see if it has any staying power. By the way, Kat will be singing the national anthem before Sunday’s AFC playoff game between the Jets and Chargers.

Kellie Pickler: Another season five contestant, Kellie has had the number 21 song on the country singles chart for second straight week with “Didn’t You Know How Much I Loved You.” Her second album is number 28 among country albums, up one spot.

Carrie Underwood: Speaking of country, “Play On” gets bumped down to number three on the country albums chart by Lady Antebellum. (Of course, Taylor is still entrenched at number one.) “Play On” is still number 18 on the Billboard 200, down just one spot from last week.

As for the singles, “Cowboy Casanova” is 45 on the Hot 100, down 10 spots. “Temporary Home” moves up eight spots on that chart to 89, and one spot on the county singles chart to number 16.
