Maelyn Jarmon told The Voice that, as a struggling artist in New York, she was about to give up on music.

Instead, the 25-year-old auditioned for The Voice and became an early favorite thanks to a four-chair turn blind audition.

And Tuesday night, she completed her journey on the show by becoming the Season 16 champ.

in the process, she also made a winner of John Legend in his first season as a Voice coach. He was her coach throughout her run on the show.

The biggest story during Season 16 was the dominance of Team Blake Shelton. The winningest coach in Voice history entered this week’s finals with three singers, Andrew Sevener, Dexter Roberts and Gyth Rigdon.

But that might have wound up working in Maelyn’s favor. Country fans of The Voice — and there are many — likely split their votes three ways.

Of course, the biggest factor for Maelyn was more likely pitch perfect vocals from her first performance on, and especially stirring renditions of “Stay” in last week’s semifinals and of “Hallelujah” in Monday’s show-closing performance.

In brief comments after being announced as the winner, Maelyn said she had “no expectations” entering the show, but had a hunch that she and John Legend would make a good team.

As for her post-show plans?

“I have music ready to go,” she told Talent Recap following Monday’s show. “I will be releasing it. I will be touring. I have some other things I’d like to do. I’m ready to hit the ground running.”

Gyth Rigdon of Team Blake finished second Tuesday, followed by Dexter Roberts and Andrew Sevener.
