A number of American Idol contestants earned the judges’ praise after singing original songs in the New Orleans audition episode.

But only one is the nephew of Carlos Santana. Or auditioned playing guitar with a broken thumb.

That would be Adam Lasher, a 27-year-old songwriter from Danville, Calif.

Adam performed an original called “These Shoes” for the judges. And to say it went well would be an understatement.

Keith Urban praised his vocals and his artistry, and he got similar feedback from Jennifer Lopez and Harry Connick Jr.

Needless to say, Adam got a unanimous vote to advance to Idol’s Hollywood round.

What the show didn’t show: Adam’s not only related to Carlos Santana, he has a much more substantial music resume than your average American Idol contestant.

He has already released an album called “Bootlegs” and a pair of EPs — all available on iTunes — and is apparently on the verge of releasing a third called “These Shoes,” according to his website. Guess what song’s likely to be on that EP.

In his website bio, Adam tells us he comes from a family of musicians and began playing piano when he was just 5.

But he says it wasn’t until age 11 when he started playing guitar that he started “speaking” music and writing lyrics.

He’s a graduate of the Berklee College of Music. As for his genre: “genres are dead” he writes on his Facebook page.

Here are some Adam links, followed by a couple of samples of his music.
