His audition: Nick Hagelin, 28, Atlanta, Ga., auditioned with Maroon 5’s “Lost Stars,” showing off impressive range from the opening note. Christina Aguilera turned her chair early in the performance. At the last second, Pharrell Williams and Blake Shelton turned as well. Nick joined Team Pharrell, calling his coach “the Quincy Jones of our generation.”
His background: Both of his parents were performing artists, and Nick says he was encouraged to try ballet growing up. At 18, he got a contract with Carolina Ballet and became a professional dancer. But he says he always loved music and would perform whenever he got the chance. He says it was his wife, Christina, who encouraged him “to hang up the tights and pursue music full time.” He said his career was looking up when his son was born and diagnosed with arthrogryposis, prompting some doctors to say he’d never walk or feed himself. “My new primary focus in life became his recovery,” Nick says. His son, Bash, now walks on his own and adorably strolled onto The Voice stage after Nick’s audition. Nick also had a record contract at one time, but parted ways with the label over artistic differences.
