Their audition: Andi and Alex (both 23), from Green Bay, Wisc., auditioned with “Thank You.” Adam Levine and Gwen Stefani turned around almost immediately. Pharrell Williams and Blake Shelton followed. Adam called them one of the most perfectly fitting duos of all time on The Voice. Andi and Alex decided to join Team Adam.
Their background: Yep, they’re twins, which I’m pretty sure is a first on The Voice. How to tell them apart? Andi has a nose ring; Alex has a little bit longer hair. Their parents performed in a country band. Andi says her mom would pull them up on stage to sing. At age 5, Alex says their mom taught them their first harmony line. “It came super naturally, and we’ve been doing harmony ever since.” After high school, the young ladies formed a band called She the Monster, which played alternative, indie, folk music. The band parted ways in the summer of 2014. Andi works a part-time job at a jewelry store; Alex works with children. But they’d love to keep performing together, though they fear they’ll have to split up unless “something big happens.” Alex is now married; Andi has a boyfriend who lives in Canada.
What the show didn’t show: Well, something big happened for Andi and Alex Peot. Their blind audition cover of the Dido song wasn’t just the most successful from the fourth blind audition episode of The Voice. It became the most successful blind audition song yet, climbing to number 36 on iTunes overall singles chart and number four on its alternative singles chart.
And there’s an interesting story behind that indie rock band the sisters were involved with. Its origins began when Andi met two of the other members — Darren Oosthuizen and James Lennox — at a college in Australia. Andi briefly joined their existing band called Nova Sky. When it disbanded, they began writing material for what became She the Monster.
Andi says the name of the band was pulled from an old movie poster for The Amazing She Monster. “We were just trying to find something unique and that almost like didn’t really fit our vibe of music, so it would be that much more unique type of thing,” she explains.
She the Monster wound up being based in Green Bay and released an EP, but visa issues made it difficult for the band to stay together and the project came to an end last summer, according to Andi. She says she and Alex still sing together regularly in church.
“What (original music) we write together that’s apart from our band, we’re still finding our sound at the moment,” Andi said. “It’s going to be similar, probably not as electronic and more acoustic to fit our softer voices.”
As for the blind audition, once four chairs turned, the process of selecting a coach took a bit longer than what we saw on TV, Alex admitted. The twins went into the audition thinking they’d pick Pharrell. “But with Adam, he was just so passionate and I think that passion was what really drove us to choose him,” Alex said. “He was really interested in the song choices that he would choose for us, which was really huge for Andi and I for a coach to really understand where we come from musically.”
On iTunes: Just their performances from The Voice. She the Monster’s four-song “Pacific” EP is available for download from Amazon.com.
Update:
Battle round: Defeated Chance Pena singing “Wherever You Will Go.” Chance was stolen by Blake Shelton. The song hit #16 on the iTunes’s singles chart, the best of the battle round.
Knockout round: They performed “Stupid Boy,” but lost the match to Blaine Mitchell and were eliminated.
