His audition: David Owens, 24, of Indianapolis, Ind., covered “I Can’t Make You Love Me” by Bonnie Raitt for his blind audition. Displaying a nice tone and lots of vocal power, he earned a chair turn from Kelly Clarkson. But no one else turned, in spite of an impressive glory note t the end of the performance. “They’re all nuts,” Kelly said of her coaching colleagues who failed to turn around.

More about David …

* In the past year, David says he’s gotten married to his wife Kayla, got a new job and had a son, Emmett, who was born a month early, but pulled through fine. Emmett is now 7 months old.

* He grew up in a family of seven children and started singing in church at age 12 or 13.

* When he was in high school, David said he did anything that allowed him to sing. “I was in competition show choir. I performed in local school and professional theater. I had a band with my friends, and I led worship at church. At that time in my life, music was all I wanted to do.”

* But he told The Voice that “because we grew up without a lot of money, I felt uneasy about pursuing music as a full-time career,” David said. “I hung up a microphone, kind of with the focus of I want to get a job and have a stable family.” However, he did continue to lead worship services.

* David told Voice Views that while he hasn’t released any original music, “I love to write. My songs tend to be dramatic, maybe due to my theater background.”

* David went to an open call audition for Season 15 and was invited to the blind auditions. But the teams filled up before he could sing, so he was invited back for Season 16.

* David’s reasoning behind his blind audition song selection: “It’s such a beautiful and powerful song. I wanted to embrace the challenge of singing an iconic song and making it my own. Also, like the music I write, it’s very dramatic, so I think I just gravitated to it.”

* He called the blind audition process “long and nerve wrecking, especially for me because it lasted two seasons. But once I got called onto the stage and was able to do what I love it was a HUGE relief. I couldn’t be happier about being on Team Kelly. I just wanted to get one chair and I got the two-time undefeated champ. So no complaints on my end!”
