Her audition: Katelyn Read, 25, of Raleigh, N.C., sang Anna Nalick’s “Breathe (2 a.m.)” in a blind audition that was part of a montage. She landed on Team Christina Aguilera.
Her background: Katelyn’s Voice bio tells us she competed in fine arts competitions and sang in choir in high school. She went to college to pursue a degree in art, but took time off to start a family. Her daughter is now 5, and her husband is encouraging her to take a shot at her dream of becoming a singer. Carson identified her as an indie-pop singer and stay-at-home-mom.
What the show didn’t show: Katelyn tells The Voice she started singing in elementary school and “that’s when I realized that I liked singing, I liked being on stage.” That said, she didn’t pursue music until a couple of years ago. She got pregnant at age 19 and dropped out of college to become a full-time mom. “Wife and mom took precedence over music,” she says. Her husband, Chris, is the one who urged her to pursue her musical dreams. “He’s the one who has been encouraging me to do music and pushing me to take next steps.” To that end, Katelyn released a five-track EP last summer called “She Can Feel It.” You can check out acoustic versions of two of the songs below, you can hear the full songs on her website (“My Beloved” is superb) and you can learn the story behind all of the songs on that site. She’s even offering two free songs for anyone who submits their email address. On Facebook, she lists The Civil Wars, Amos Lee and Billie Holliday as musical influences and describes her genre as “a kind of folkish blues.” She tells the News & Observer in Raleigh that “I try to point my music in the direction of folks, blues, with that singer-songwriter simplistic-type feel.” Oh, and you have to love this young lady’s humility. On her Twitter she writes: “I sing. I write songs. Just pretending to be cooler than I really am.”
On being on Team Christina: “When Christina turned around, I was shocked, and my mind went everywhere except for the song I was singing. Christina had some tough feedback for me initially, and that was hard for me to take at first, but it’s something that I’m learning to use to make me better.”
On iTunes: Her audition song and that five-track EP from 2014, “She Can Feel It.”
Update: In the battle round, she was matched with Treeva Gibson. They sang “Addicted to Love.” Christina declared Treeva the winner; Katelyn was eliminated from the show.
