His audition: Noah Jackson, 19, of Sunderland, Mass., auditioned with Sia’s “Elastic Heart” and landed a spot on Team Gwen in an audition that was part of a montage package. We did get to hear Gwen compliment him on the dynamics in his vocals.
His background: We didn’t get to meet Noah on the show, but The Voice website tells us he was a track standout as well as interested in music in high school. In fact, he was captain of his track team and a sprinter and helped the team break school records. He started focusing solely on music after tragically losing two friends, The Voice website says. He attends the Berklee College of Music in Boston.
More on Noah: Noah explains that those tragic deaths occurred when he was a sophomore at Frontier Regional High School; he calls one of the young women who died “an immensely close friend of mine.” The effect on him: “I had been going through a fair amount of stress. Seeing the community come together in mourning for these girls in two separate occasions and watching all my friends be so miserable at their passing … it basically gave me a reality check on how necessary it was for me to grow up and get out of my own head and just succeed instead of wallowing in problems.”
In a conference call with the media, Noah described himself as a singer-songwriter who enjoys a number of genres, including R&B/soul, hip-hop. He also says he performs a little jazz. And while he hasn’t released any originals yet, he says he intends too after Season 9 of The Voice ends.
“I sing mostly in coffee shops and little venues,” he added. “I’ve had very little exposure except through word of mouth. I’m a solo artist, but I work with a core group of musicians/producers that often help bring whatever musical vision I have together.” He said he spent a year at Berklee before taking a semester off to focus on The Voice and his music.
I’ll be posting profile blogs on every singer who lands a spot on Season 9 of The Voice. For links to the others, head here. Keep checking back. There are many more to come.
