Mia Pfirrman, Beth Spangler advance to knockout round on The Voice

Saying there was only room “for one belter” on his team, Adam Levine pitted two of his best female singers against one another in the battle round Tuesday night.

That meant Mia Pfirrman, 19, of Temple City, Calif., went up against Beth Spangler, 30, of Aiken, S.C.

Both singers turned four chairs with their blind audition performances. Adam asked them to sing “I Turn to You” by Christina Aguilera, a tune both singers said they were familiar with.

During rehearsals, Adam said both young women have incredible vocal skills; they just need to learn how to use them.

They displayed that know-how during the battle, delivering a series of glory notes before coming together in perfect harmony.

Adam called his selection of a winner “a coin flip,” but decided to advance Mia to the knockout round.

That’s when Gwen Stefani used her final steal to save Beth from elimination, meaning she advanced as well.

During a conference call with the media Wednesday, Mia called the battle round “super fun” and said she was glad The Voice saved their battle for the very last one aired.

“We were just so determined to make sure we both stayed (on the show),” she said.

Beth echoed those sentiments. “Mia and I just decided from the beginning that we just wanted to put on a stellar performance. Our goal from the very beginning was to both stay and get a steal. I think we challenged each other. I think we worked well together.”

That said, when Mia was proclaimed the winner, Beth wasn’t so certain about her Voice future.

“They do a really good job of keeping us from knowing how many steals are left so we’re really focused on going out there and putting on the best performance possible,” she said. When the battle round ended, Beth said she thought there might not be a steal left.

“I honestly thought I was going home. And so I spoke from my heart and thanked Adam. I went down and hugged everybody, genuinely thinking there was no opportunity for me to stay. So I was completely flabbergasted when I heard that button push.”

Mia said she also tried out for The Voice in Season 5 and Season 6, but failed to get to perform a blind audition in front of the coaches because the teams filled up.

“Being part of a show like this is mind-boggling,” she said.
