Music charts: Kelly and Jason close in on #1

Kelly Clarkson walks away after singing the national anthem prior to game three of the World Series last year. (AP Photo)Sorry about the delay in reporting this week’s Billboard chart results. That two-hour Thursday night Green Miles episode of Idol, complete with the announcement of this year’s semifinalists kept me a little busy.

Anyway, easily the biggest bit of news on the charts this week is the phenomenal success of the Jason Aldean/Kelly Clarkson duet, “Don’t You Want to Stay.” This week it jumps from number six to number two on the country singles chart — a dramatic leap for those who don’t follow that chart regularly.

The only obstacle between it and number one: Blake Shelton’s “Who Are You When I’m Not Watching.”

That puts Kelly one spot from becoming just the second American Idol contestant to have a number one on the county chart and on the Hot 100, something she accomplished most recently with “My Life Would Suck Without You.”

Carrie Underwood was the first to accomplish the feat. Of course, she’s hit number one on the country charts several times now. But here’s a trivia question for you: Which Carrie Underwood song hit number one on the Hot 100? A clue: It was not “Before He Cheats.” I’m post the answer at the bottom of this blog.

Anyway, in addition to hitting number two on the country chart, “Don’t You Want to Stay” moves up another spot to 38 on the Hot 100 this week.

Kelly and Jason performed the song on “Ellen” earlier this week. I’ve embedded the video of their performance below in case you missed it. Head to Ellen’s website for more on their appearance, including the backstage banter between Kelly and Jason.

Other chart highlights:

* Daughtry’s “September” is still number two on the adult contempoary chart. Bruno Mars

* Jennifer Hudson’s “What You At” single moves up four spots on the Hip-Hop/R&B singles chart. It’s now number 29.

* Mandisa’s latest single, “Stronger,” is still climbing the Christian singles chart. It’s up to number 18.

I didn’t forget. The answer to that trivia question: Carrie Underwood hit number one on the Hot 100 with her very first single — “Inside Your Heaven” — her Idol coronation song. Ironically, that song did not reach number one on the country chart for Carrie.
