Night 2 of the knockouts on The Voice

0

Hey, Miley Cyrus was actually pretty helpful during her debut as an adviser on The Voice.

She didn’t drop a single f-bomb that needed to be bleeped out.

She didn’t make a single reference to getting high.

She didn’t make any obscene gestures.

She stayed fully clothed, for crying out loud.

My interest in having Miley around as a coach for Season 11 is still about even with my interest in listening to “The Climb” for 48 hours straight.

But for two weeks, watching Miley might not be too unbearable.

Team Blake

Peyton Parker

Peyton Parker

Adam WakefieldAdam Wakefield versus Peyton Parker

The background: Blake says he paired Adam and Peyton together because they’re his story-tellers. Peyton is the young lady who convinced her parents to move to Nashville so she can pursue music. She wants to sing The Dixie Chicks “Travelin’ Soldier.” Blake wasn’t thrilled with the song until her heard Peyton rehearse it. Adam is part of a bluegrass bad in Nashville. He’ll sing Sam Cooke’s “Bring It On Home to Me.” Adam says this is the first time he’s ever performed without an instrument.

The knockout; Quick tip for Adam: It’s easier to connect with an audience with your eyes open. Of course, you can barely see his under the brim of that cowboy hat. That said, Adam looks pretty comfortable without his guitar. And among the males on The Voice, he certainly has a distinctive voice, which should be the most important ingredient to Blake. Peyton’s turn. That first verse was a bit bland, but once she hits the chorus … dang, what a nice tone. Loved her voice on that. She did hit a couple clunky notes.

My pick: Adam probably delivered a slightly better vocal.

Blake’s pick: He declares Adam the winner.

The steal: There can’t be one, because Blake owns the only remaining steal. If there’s a coach’s bring-back this year, maybe Blake will bring back Peyton.

Team Pharrell

Nick Hagelin

Moushumi Chitre

Moushumi Chitre

Moushumi versus Nick Hagelin

The background: Moushumi is the medical school student who took a year off to pursue music. She’s already released an EP. She’s going to sing “New Americana” by Halsey and bridges the gap between pop and alternative music, which Moushumi says is what she aims for. Nick is the former ballet dancer with the young son named Bash, who was born with medical problems. He’s already released lots of original music. He’s singing “Lost Without You” by Robin Thicke. He wants to be a pop-soul singer.

The knockout: Moushumi goes first and delivers a really nice vocal. I didn’t remember her sounding that good during her blind audition. Really nice ending too. Nick will be showing off his falsetto. He certainly has impressive range. I have a feeling my reaction to this — and his skin-tighth shirt — might be stronger if I weren’t a male.

My pick: Moushumi. I just enjoyed her performance more.

Pharrell’s pick: He awards the win to Moushumi.

The steal: Nope, meaning Nick is eliminated.

Team Christina

Maya Smith

Tamar Davis

Tamar Davis

Tamar Davis versus Maya Smith

The background: Maya is the young lady who works for the postal service. She lost her battle round match to roommate Hannah Huston, but Christina and Blake tried to steal her. She’ll sing “No One” by Alicia Keys. Tamar is the woman who grew up singing with a girls group, then wound up working with Prince as an adult. She’ll sing “Lay Me Down” by Sam Smith.

The knockout: Maya actually sounds a little sharp. Perhaps nerves showing through. She delivers a really nice ending, but until that point I wasn’t crazy about that vocal. Tamar’s turn. Really strong opening. Okay, she’d better win this. She just hit the chorus, and she’s already showed tons of stage presence, great power and great range. The Voice billed this as the vocal of the night. They weren’t kidding. Heck of a glory note at the end, too.

My pick: Tamar in a landslide.

Christina’s pick: She awards the win to Tamar.

The steal: There isn’t one, meaning Maya is eliminated.
