Six more battle round match-ups will be featured tonight on The Voice.
But the losing contestants won’t automatically be eliminated from the competition.
They might follow in the footsteps of Caroline Glaser, Karina Iglesias, Sasha Allen and Taylor Beckham and wind up stolen by an opposing coach.
If you’re still sorting out who’s who among this year’s 48 contestants, head here for links for profile and pre-show music for each singer.
I still have a few more to add, but a profile has already been created for everyone who will perform on the show this week.
Battle 1:
Jessica Childress vs. Vedo (Team Usher): Jessica snagged the very last spot on Season 4 of The Voice with a robust performance of “Marry You.” Vedo sang a Justin Bieber song in his blind audition, hoping to get Usher to turn around. It worked. Usher will have them singing “Locked Out of Heaven” by Bruno Mars. Jessica said she thinks the song poses a bigger challenge for her. Jessica gave up her full-time job for this opportunity. Vedo tells us his mom passed away from cancer shortly after his blind audition; we met her on that episode of The Voice. OK, another good battle on The Voice. Both of these two are doing wonderfully on the song. Vedo had a really nice run in there. And for someone who went into p.r. post-college, Jessica looks like a natural on the stage. That might have been the closest battle I’ve seen yet. My pick: Jessica.
Usher picks Vedo; Jessica does not get stolen.
Battle 2:
Luke Edgemon vs. Monique Abbadie (Team Shakira): Monique earned one of those coveted four-chair turn-arounds during the blind auditions. She’s a former child star looking for a second chance at stardom. Luke might have done the same, if two of the coaches hadn’t already filled their teams when he auditioned with “I Can’t Make You Love Me.” Shakira will have them sing Lady Gaga’s “You and I.” Luke says he’s trying to shrug the background mentality; Monique says she wants to avoid sounding like she’s singing musical theater. Dang, Luke has a really nice tone to his voice. Monique has a big voice that’s perhaps slightly more distinctive. Settle in for another great performance. Good luck, Shakira. Monique has a heck of a big voice and showed fantastic control on that ending. Luke hit a heck of a note on his last solo bit, then did the same on the ending. Adam and Blake both prefer Luke. My pick: Monique.
Shakira picks Monique in what she calls a strategic decision; Luke is stolen by Blake, who uses his last steal.
Battle 3
Jacqui Sandell vs. Savannah Berry (Team Blake): Blake will have them sing Little Big Town’s “Little White Church.” Jacqui is the former ballet dancer who participated on The Warped Tour with her band, My Arcadia. Savannah is an aspiring country singer who gained fame with a YouTube cover of “Stuck Like Glue.” You have to figure Savannah has the edge since Blake has given them a country song to sing. Jacqui says she has to work on singing rather than growling the notes, a bad habit she picked up from touring so much. On the other hand, she thinks touring will help her performance wise. Hmm, gotta say, Savannah’s a fine performer at age 17. I expected a little more edge from Jacqui. But if that song has edge, Savannah is the one who brought it. Not to mention, she hit a couple of amazing notes. My pick: Savannah.
Blake picks Savannah; Jacqui does not get stolen.
Battle 4
C. Perkins vs. Kris Thomas (Team Shakira): C. Perkins works at a grocery store. We saw just a few seconds of his blind audition. His first name is Craig, but he shortened it to C. because he said it sounds more mellow and more artistic. Kris has already released a couple of country singles. But he auditioned and landed a spot on Team Shakira by singing a Whitney Houston song in his blind audition. They will sing “It Will Rain” by Bruno Mars. Kris says he needs to work on developing the feeling of the song, because frills don’t impress Shakira the way emotion in a performance does. How in the world did just one judge turn around for Kris? Fabulous opening. C. sounds pretty good, too, but he drew a tough match, pitted against the more experienced Kris. My pick: Kris.
Shakira picks Kris. And, at the very last moment, C. Perkins is stolen by Usher.
Battle 5:
Patrick Dodd vs. Midas Whale (Team Adam): Patrick performs in Memphis, hundreds of days per year. He’s the guy who set aside his music career for a while to support his family. Midas Whale is made up of Ryan Hayes and former American Idol contestant Jon Peter Lewis. They’re jokesters, as we’re reminded again tonight. But from everything I’ve seen, they take their music very seriously. Adam has them singing Elvis Presley’s “Burning Love.” Adam didn’t like the way rehearsals were going, so he added a bluegrass tone to the song. Adam certainly has created a fun performance. Because the two guys on Midas Whale sing harmonies on everything, it’s tougher for their vocals to stand out. Patrick has no such problem. Blake says it sounds like he gargles with broken glass. I’d pick Patrick.
Adam picks Midas Whale; Patrick does not get stolen
Battle 6:
Ryan Innes vs. Orlando Dixon (Team Usher): Ryan turned all four chairs with his performance of “Gravity” but picked Usher because he’s a soul singer. He’s also a soul singer in Utah. Orlando studied at the Berklee School of Music. Usher was the only coach to turn around for him. Partly for that reason, Orlando says he feels like he might be the underdog. He’s singing to earn a better life for his family. They’ll be singing “Ain’t No Sunshine.” Wow, Ryan is really good. I like that opening even better than his audition. Orlando was told he had to let his emotion show through his performance, and he seems to be doing a much better job of that. Both guys hit some ridiculous notes in the last 30 seconds of that song. I’d pick Ryan by the narrowest of margins.
Usher picks Ryan. But Orlando Dixon is stolen by Adam.
