Fans will get a double dose of performances from American Idol’s Top 7 Monday night. And it’s a good thing. Stretching seven meaningful performances over two hours would have made for a very slow-moving show. In addition to tackling songs by Taylor Swift, the Idol hopefuls will sing songs made famous by artists with…
I’ve never been a fan of single artist theme nights on American Idol. But if you’re going to have one, I can’t think of an artist better to cover than Taylor Swift. She’s had country hits. She’s had pop hits. She’s a singer-songwriter supreme. So if that’s you’re style, you’re in luck. That is,…
American Idol is still the best singing show on TV, but something has seemed off-kilter that last three weeks. The Judges Song Contest found some Season 29 contestants performing songs from the 1990s that they’d never heard before. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Night barely rocked. And Disney Night came off as a…
Turns out going head to head with the NBA playoffs on Monday night is more challenging than going head-to-head with The Voice. Which sorta figures, since The Voice is a singing show in steep decline and just completed its worst season ever. Anyway, the NBA playoffs aired on NBC Monday night and bumped Idol…
Could an upset be brewing on American Idol? Hannah Harper has been the clear-cut favorite since her viral audition performance of her original song “String Cheese.” She’s also scored the most popular performance — based on American Idol Facebook page video views — every week since fan voting started. And most weeks, it hasn’t…
American Idol eliminated two more talented artists Monday night in singer-songwriters Kyndal (Inskeep) and Lucas Leon. The good news is that fans won’t have to wait for them to release new music. Both already have original music out. Kyndal took to social media Wednesday to thank fans for supporting her on her “big, beautiful,…
American Idol fans picked a Top 7 Monday night after the Top 9 performed tunes from the Disney songbook. When the dust settled, Kyndal and Lucas Leon headed home. And the remaining seven have to start perfecting songs by Taylor Swift. That’s right, next week’s theme is Taylor Swift. Now I hate single artist themes…
The American Idol Top 9 take on Disney tunes tonight. And by the end of the evening, that Top 9 will become a Top 7. Former Idol standout and former The Voice coach Jennifer Hudson will be on hand to mentor the contestants. She’ll also join Luke Bryan, Carrie Underwood and Lionel Richie at…
The good news for The Voice is that its ratings surged slightly this week as Season 29 came to a close. The bad news is that The Battle of Champions was still a ratings disaster, one during which The Voice was thumped in the ratings by American Idol on a weekly basis and lost…
After two disappointing weeks of performances on American Idol, I have a simple suggestion for the show. Ditch the theme weeks. Two weeks ago, we had singers performing songs from the 1990s they didn’t know. Last week, we had singers skirting the rock and rock theme to sing covers of songs by Stevie Wonder…
