There was speculation that Ariana Grande’s army of supporters would be able to vault Jim and Sasha Allen into the Season 21 Voice finals.
And there was speculation that the combination of singing for Team Blake and being the only country artist remaining in the competition would do the same for Lana Scott.
But in the end, Voice fans supported an undeniable performance Tuesday night, rewarding Jershika Maple with her second straight instant save and the fifth and final spot in next week’s finale.
That meant that Lana headed home, the first member of Team Blake to be eliminated since the live shows begin.
So did Jim and Sasha, leaving The Voice’s newest coach (Ariana) as the only one without a singer competing for the Season 21 crown.
Joshua Vacanti was eliminated too, leaving a final five of Jershika from Team Legend, Hailey Mia and Girl Named Tom from Team Kelly and Paris Winningham and Wendy Moten from Team Blake.
Here’s how Tuesday’s results show went down.
Advancing to next week’s Season 21 finale based on fan voting are:
1. Wendy Moten (Team Blake): No surprise there. Blake has been promoting Wendy as a potential winner since the season began.
2. Girl Named Tom (Team Kelly): They remain the favorites, and that would make them the first group ever to win The Voice.
3. Paris Winningham (Team Blake): I was a bit worried about Paris. His performance last night wasn’t as well received on the charts as some of his prior efforts.
4. Hailey Mia (Team Kelly): Thrilled to see it. The youngest artist on the show at 14 advances after last night’s superb performance. There are some past seasons when she would have been the favorite.
That means Jershika Maple, Joshua Vacanti, Jim and Sasha Allen and Lana Scott will perform for the save.
That also means either Ariane Grande or John Legend won’t have a finalist in Season 21.
Lana Scott (Team Blake), “Things a Man Oughta Know”: Lana was done in by an ill-advised song choice Monday night. She’s back to singing a song that emphasizes the wonderfully unique tone in her voice rather than her ability to belt tonight. Grade: B
Joshua Vacanti (Team Legend), “My Heart Will Go On”: Fans of Joshua will love that. His theatrical delivery just isn’t my cup of tea. And that performance was a bit too frill-filled for my taste. Grade: B–
Jim and Sasha Allen (Team Ariana), “Rich Girl”: The best thing about this performance, is it will make Jershika sound fabulous in comparision, and she typically sounds fabulous anyway. Seriously, congrats to Jim and Sasha for making it this far, but they don’t belong in the finals. Grade: C–
Jershika Maple (Team Legend), “Break Every Chain”: There is power in that voice. So much power that if she doesn’t win this instant same, it’s going to be a crime. She is absolutely on fire tonight. Another great performance from Jershika. Grade: A
And the singer advancing to the finale is …
Jershika Maple! Hooray, The Voice fans got it right!
