Here’s more about Wyatt.
* He’s a 20-year-old singer-songwriter from Park City, Utah, who will audition with an original song called “Best for You.”
* It’s a song he said he wrote for his younger sister, about anxiety issues with which she was dealing. It’s also a track on his debut EP, “Brand New Boy,” which he released in May.
* You’ll also want to check out the impressive “Voicemails” from that EP. And “Best for You” wound up being the song Wyatt performed for his Idol audition.
* “Playing covers is great, because I can change them up and do my own thing with them, but performing a song of my own was more exciting for me,” he told The Park Record. “I wanted to go in with something that I had written so I could really show as much as myself as possible. Hopefully, it showed the judges that I can write and tell stories.”
* Mission accomplished. In the video American Idol already leaked from his audition, Wyatt receives praise from all three celebrity judges. Lionel Richie calls him “the Park City James Taylor, your version” and adds that he’s a “fabulous story teller.”
* Wyatt says he’s been playing music since he was in fifth grade. And being from a ski resort town, it’s not surprising that his first gig ever was at the lift line at the base of a local ski resort.
* In his website bio, Wyatt says he’s been performing for 10 years. And he took the suitcase he’s used as a tip jar for the last six or seven years with him to the Idol audition.
* Wyatt describes his music as combining “the acoustic singer/songwriter style with structural hints of rock and pop.” He says his musical influences include Anders Osborne, Andy Shauf, and Phoebe Bridgers.
* And he planned to attend business school, but withdrew at the last minute to devote himself to pursuing music, that web bio indicates.
* Apparently, Wyatt also has a sense of humor. The web bio ends with this line: “p.s. Wyatt wrote this in third person… he’s not cool enough to have people write it for him. Thanks for reading!”
* As for Idol, Wyatt told KPCW.com that he watched the show when he was young — he remembers Phillip Phillips as being particularly inspiring — and couldn’t resist when the opportunity to audition presented itself.
