The Voice wins, Carrie shines at the Emmys

Sunday night, The Voice accomplished something American Idol never has.

The Voice earned the Emmy for best reality competition, going head to head with “The Amazing Race,” “Dancing with the Stars,” “Project Runway,” “So You Think You Can Dance” and “Top Chef.”

American Idol was not nominated for the second straight year after being nominated every year from 2003 to 2011 and failing to win.

“The Amazing Race” won nearly every one of those years and was back in the winner’s circle last year, when The Voice secured its first-ever nomination.

The other singing show highlight during the Emmys came when Carrie Underwood participated in a tribute to the 1960s by singing “Yesterday,” the Beatles song from 1965.

Here’s a bit of trivia: Carrie won Idol in Season 4, one of the few years The Beatles or Lennon-McCartney wasn’t one of the theme nights.

Idol did have a 1960s night that year. Carrie sang “When Will I Be Loved,” the Everly Brothers’ hit.

Among Sunday’s other winners was Derek Hough for choreography. Derek helped partner Kellie Pickler dance her way to a win on “Dancing with the Stars” earlier this year.
