But it’s also a form of flattery since it’s an extra tool a Voice coach can use to ensure he or she lands a coveted artists.
After becoming the first two block “victims” of Season 15, Radha and Keith Paluso clearly didn’t consider themselves victims at all.
Radha — stage name for Radharani Martinez, 20, of Jersey City — turned three chairs in The Voice season premiere with her impressive cover of “Mama Knows Best” by Jessie J.
But Adam Levine blocked Jennifer Hudson, eliminating her from Radha’s list of options, then landed the pop singer for his own team.
Radha sounded anything but upset during a Tuesday conference call with the media, though admitting she might have gone with Team JHUD if Adam hadn’t used his block.
“The fact that each coach is allowed to have one block, and I heard that I was the first block of the season is really, really crazy to me,” she said. “I’m so happy and I’m so shook honestly.”
And after working with Adam — the blind auditions were taped way back in June — Radha said it worked out just fine.
“He’s very honest,” she said of her coach. “I’m the type of person that really likes kind of really straightforward honesty. It’s okay to be hard on me a little because, I really take constructive criticism really well.
“So far working with him has been so amazing because he really knows I have a lot of potential, and I feel like he’s really bringing it out of me.”
On night two of the blind auditions, Keith Paluso, 30, of Memphis, Tenn., impressed Blake Shelton and Adam Levine with his soulful cover of Kaleo’s “Way Down We Go.”In his case, Blake blocked Adam Levine, meaning Keith automatically became a member of Team Blake Shelton.
“I think the block is an honor,” he told Voice Views. “The contestants and I have talked about it before, it’s a great compliment.
“You (the coaches) only get one for the season. That means you like a contestant enough that not only will you turn a chair for them, but you’ll use your one block to get that person.”
Keith played music with his brother in college, but stepped away from performing when he became a park ranger in Tennessee.
He recently returned to the music scene and said he entered the blind audition with the intent of putting on the best possible performance and without a specific coach in mind.
But, like Radha, he said he’s pleased with how things turned out.
“Blake jumps around a lot on the show, but he is an incredibly intelligent person,” Keith said. “I’ve been out of the game for a while, but I feel like Blake has a great ear for things and how he can change them for the better.”
We’ll see Radha and Keith next in the show’s battle rounds, which begin in three weeks. The blind auditions continue next week on The Voice.
