And in one of her first performances outside a church setting, the 20-year-old worship leader turned four chairs.
In fact, she was one of just three singers to accomplish that feat during the opening week of Season 17.
Given her country version of the song, The Voice coaches figured she was Team Blake Shelton bound.
Instead, Brennan opted to join Team Kelly Clarkson.
Here’s what Brennan, from Dacusville, S.C., told Voice Views about her blind audition experience.
Voice Views: How did you wind up auditioning for The Voice Season 17 and what prompted you to do it?
Brennan: I decided to audition for The Voice after I prayed and asked God to show me that if I pursued this that it wouldn’t separate me from his spirit. After that, two weeks in a row at church, two separate people came up to me and told me, “you should really audition for The Voice.” That was too specific for me to avoid, and I felt like God was telling me that it would be a good thing!
Voice Views: Had you performed that version of “You Are My Sunshine” before and how did you come up with it?
Brennan: I had never performed the song “You Are My Sunshine” before The Voice. I knew I loved the song because Morgane Stapleton had a version that I was crazy about. (I’m a HUGE fan of the Stapletons.) But The Voice was the first time I performed it. My grandparents never failed to light up my life, so singing that song for them was the least I could do.
Voice Views: Why did you decide to join Team Kelly? Everyone seemed certain you’d pick Team Blake.
Brennan: I thought for sure I would be Team Blake. In fact, the whole time prior to the audition I told everyone all I wanted was to be on Blake Shelton’s team. However, while all the coaches were pitching themselves to me, I felt a special connection with Kelly that I didn’t feel with the other coaches. She was the most passionate, and my heart said Team Kelly. So I went with that! I’m so happy I did. I’m so excited to work with Kelly Clarkson!
Voice Views: And what was that blind audition experience like?
Brennan: Four chairs. Wow. You know, I never in a million years thought I would ever have that sort of validation for my talent. That’s what the audition was for me. Validation. That I can pursue music and do whatever I set my mind on. Those four coaches will never understand fully what they did for this smalltown girl. An experience I will always treasure. The best moment of my life.
