Max Boyle is one of the knockout round bound artists for Team John Legend of The Voice.

Voice fans got to see Max turned two chairs with his blind audition cover of Ed Sheeran’s “Wayfaring Stranger.”

But the show aired just a tiny snippet of his battle round match with Matt New.

John Legend decided to advance Max following their performance of “Let Me Love You.” Matt was eliminated.

Here’s what Max, 23, of Toledo, Ohio, had to say about that battle round match.

Voice Views: How did you feel about the song you were given and did it pose any special challenges for you?

Max: Our song was “Let Me Love You” by DJ Snake and Justin Bieber. It wasn’t a song Matt and I would normally sing, given it’s kind of hard to show some originality and make it your own, but once we got more comfortable with it we had a lot of fun.

Voice Views: What type of feedback did you get from the coaches? Why do you think you prevailed in the battle?

Max: John and Usher both stressed to me to feel the rhythm of the song and to loosen up a little bit. I was very tight and nervous during our rehearsal with them (because, I mean, hey it’s John Legend and Usher), so it was affecting my ability to sing the way I normally can. It’s hard to say why I prevailed because Matt sounded great and he’s so talented, but at the end of the day John must have just saw something in me that he wanted to keep working with.

Voice Views: You’re now through two rounds of the competition. Is there anything in particular you’d like to showcase / get a chance to do musically in the knockouts?

Max: I would definitely like to give a more intimate performance. Both of my performances have been upbeat and I’ve been dancing around the stage, so it would be cool to change that up a bit!
