One of the most endearing moments from The Voice blind auditions came when Matt New’s wife and two young sons were invited on stage for a family huddle that determined which coach he would pick for Season 17.

Matt went with Team John Legend, but was eliminated from the show following a battle round match revealed Tuesday.

That said, the show aired just a few seconds of the performance of “Let Me Love You” by Matt and battle partner Max Boyle.

Turns out, we’ll be hearing from Matt again very soon. Here’s what the 29-year-old from Midland, Texas, told Voice Views about his time on the show and the new music he’s planning to release.

Voice Views: What do you consider your biggest takeaway / lesson learned from The Voice experience?

Matt: The biggest takeaway for me is the risk is always worth the reward. At this point there really isn’t failure for me. It’s only either success or learning. The whole mindset of waiting for doors to open isn’t really in me. I will continue to open doors and see what’s on the other side. I couldn’t imagine if I allowed my fear of potential failure to stop me from auditioning.

Voice Views: Can you tell us a bit about that battle round match we didn’t get to hear?

Matt: Unfortunately, it was montaged. Max and I were given Justin Bieber “Let Me Love You.” While I think it’s a great song, it’s challenging to diversify yourself with a song like that. It was definitely a surprise but one we took on. We both executed exactly what we had practiced, and Max did an amazing job. I’m super proud of him and what he’s going for.

Voice Views: The battles were filmed over the summer. What have you been doing musically since then and where are you hoping The Voice experience leads?

Matt: The end goal of doing The Voice for me was to take a step in the direction of making and releasing music. Since then I’ve been home and I’ve finished a few songs that I’m really excited to release as well as working on live shows.

Balancing all of that with managing a gym is a challenge, but it’s worth staying up late and waking up early to reach that goal. I’ve also been coaching my son’s football team, so there’s that haha.

Voice Views: Do you plan to release new music anytime soon? If so, can you tell me about that — what you’re planning, what fans can expert in terms of sound and the timetable for doing?

Matt: Thanks for asking this! I think a lot of people unfortunately get off the show and because of the mental and emotional toll that it takes spend months and sometimes years trying to recover or find who they set out to be.

Knowing that, I’ve worked really hard to try to break that mold. I’ve got music ready to go. I’m releasing my very first single “LA” on Nov. 26, followed by another single beginning spring. Ultimately followed by a five-song EP in May. My sound is a mixture of pop/singer songwriter. Think Coldplay meets John Mayer and they have a baby named the Weeknd haha. (Not the best mental picture but hopefully you get it).

Voice Views: Is there anything else you’d like to add about The Voice experience?

Matt: More than anything, having my family with me, the amazing amount of support we’ve received, and what this journey has done for me has been the perfect timing and ingredients to hopefully put me on a path of success as an artist.

We are a grateful family with full hearts from this experience. I can’t wait to release music into the world and I’m so grateful to God for using me to inspire, love, and bring hope to people through this journey.
