CammWess says he grew up listening to John Legend’s music.

And he says John “has probably influenced my sound more than any other artist.”

So when John Legend turned less than 30 seconds into Camm’s blind audition … well, let’s just say the 22-year-old from Blythewood, S.C., has accomplished his goal.

Camm preformed “Earned It” by the Weeknd for the occasion and also earned a chair turn from Blake Shelton.

Here’s what he told Voice Views about his blind audition experience.

Voice Views: How did you wind up auditioning for The Voice Season 18 and what prompted you to do it?

Camm: I was contacted via Instagram! Once I saw that the message was real, it was a no-brainer that I had to take this opportunity!

Voice Views: Why did you choose “Earned It” for your audition song? What’s your performance history with that song (for instance, is it one you’ve played often)?

Camm: “Earned It” was actually one of the first songs I performed as “CammWess” !

Voice Views: Did you have a coaching preference heading into the blind audition? Why did you decide to go with John Legend as your coach?

Camm: I definitely wanted to go on Team Legend coming into this experience, but I wanted to keep an open mind. I went with John as my coach because I figured I could learn the most about my genre from him.

Voice Views: Can you tell me a little about what that blind audition experience was like? John turned within 30 seconds of you starting singing. Were you aware of that and did that help take some of the pressure off?

Camm: The blind audition is an absolute blur in my memory but I do remember thinking “I think John just turned around,” but I didn’t want to look and see if he actually had because I felt it might throw off the rest of my performance.
