Idols on the Music Chart

Carrie poised for #1 debut on Billboard 200, but ‘Good Girl’s’ stuck

Carrie Underwood will almost surely top the Billboard 200 when her new album, “Blown Away,” hits the music charts next week.

But “Good Girl,” her lead single from the album, is strangely stuck on the Billboard country singles chart.

This week, the song is at number eight for the fourth straight week. And it’s unlikely to get a big boost from Carrie’s Thursday night appearance on Idol, because she sang the title track off her new album instead.

If the song doesn’t reach the top of the country chart, it would be a rare occurrence.

By my count, Carrie released 14 singles to country radio from her first three albums. The only ones that didn’t hit number one — “Mama’s Song,” “Told You So” and “Don’t Forget to Remember Me.”

Each of those peaked at number 2.

Elsewhere on the charts this week:

* Kelly Clarkson moves up to number three on the adult contemporary chart with “Stronger.” If the song reaches number one, it will have topped seven different Billboard charts since its release. Kelly’s country version of “Mr. Know It All” cracked the top 30 on the country singles chart for the first time, moving up from 33 to 30.

* Casey James’ single, “Let’s Don’t Call It a Night,” dropped out of the top 30 on the country singles chart for the first time in several weeks. It peaked at number 21. Six weeks after its release, Casey’s album is number 34 on the country albums chart.

* Daughtry’s third album, “Break the Spell,” jumped from 150 to 124 on the Billboard 200.
