Scotty McCreery has accomplished something no Idol winner has since David Cook.
His post-Idol debut album has gone platinum.
American Idol made the announcement with a release on its website Tuesday evening.
Scotty’s album, “Clear As Day,” debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and on Billboard’s country albums chart about 14 weeks ago.
For 12 weeks, the album ranked as number one or number two on the country chart. Last week, it slipped all the way to number three.
And now it’s platinum, three months after its release. Back in Season 7, David Cook’s post-Idol debut went platinum in two months. But the only Idol finalist album to approach platinum status since that year is Adam Lambert’s “For Your Entertainment.”
Said Scotty in the release: “Never in a million years did I dream that the album would go platinum in three months. Never in a million years did I dream that the album would go platinum. It’s wild. It’s going to take me a few months or years to really wrap my head around it.” Read the full release here.
*** James Durbin special ***
If you haven’t gotten a copy of James Durbin’s new album, “Memories of a Beautiful Disaster,” you might want to do so today.
The album is a deal of the day on Amazon.com, selling for just $3.99. Heck, that’s the price of downloading three singles on iTunes, and there are more than three tunes on that album worth having.
Oh, and don’t forget, James will perform “Love Me Bad” on Conan on TNT Thursday night at 10 p.m.
*** People’s Choice Awards ***
American Idol goes for a third straight People’s Choice Awards tonight on CBS.
The show is nominated for Favorite TV Competition Show.
The competition: America’s Got Talent, Dancing with the Stars, So You Think You Can Dance and … The Voice.
The show starts at 9 p.m.
*** More award show news ***
The Golden Globe Awards will be doled out Sunday night on NBC with the show starting at 8 p.m.
Today, the show announced that presenters will include Katharine McPhee, runner-up from Idol Season 6. Katharine, of course, stars in the new NBC show “Smash” that debuts at 10 p.m. Feb. 6 on NBC.
Other presenters announced today include Adam Levine, a judge of NBC’s The Voice, Ashthon Kutcher, Rob Lowe, Robert Downey Jr., Jessica Biel and Reese Witherspoon.
*** A Siobhan Magnus album ***
Anti-Music.com posted an item today indicating the Idol Season 9 contestant Siobhan Magnus will release her independent album digitally on Sunday.
I can’t find any confirmation of this on Siobhan’s website or Twitter feed, but orders for a signed copy of “Moonbaby” are being taken on the website.
Siobhan had hoped to release the album as part of a Halloween performance in Boston back in late October, then delayed the release in hopes of a bigger distribution deal.
Anyway, here’s hoping the story is correct. One of the two songs Siobhan released from the album so far is “Black Doll,” which made my list of 10 favorite Idol songs of 2011. Listen to it below.
