Idols talk about why they stand out over the competition

Well, if Tuesday night’s report from TMZ is correct, we could be in for a drama-filled episode of American Idol Wednesday.

The website is reporting that a contestant — perhaps Jermaine Jones — will be booted from the show.

If that’s true, how does this week proceed?

Do all 11 remaining singers perform, knowing no one will get eliminated?

Does Idol bring back an eliminated contestant so there’s some sense of suspense this week?

We probably won’t learn those answers until later today. And might not know them all until showtime.

So in the meantime, I’ll continue my series of blogs catching you up with what the Top 12 said in their most recent Idol videos.

After all, there’s no sense in all of us watching the pre-commercials and the videos for the best bits.

Previous blogs in the series include where the Idols like to sing when they’re not on stage, what Twitter hashtag would best describe them and which former Idol contestant they’d most like to meet.

For Idol Chatter’s latest ranking of the top 12, go here.

And now, each contestant talks about what they think makes them stand out among  the competition.

Colton Dixon:  He says the fact that he plays piano.  “But also coming into the competition already knowing who I was (as a musician).”

Deandre Brackensick:   “I think my hair gives me an edge.”  Yep,  that’s what he said, adding that he has “a different look, something people remember.”

Elise Testone:   “Definitely my life experience (she is the oldest contestant), but also me not being afraid to totally let loose and put my heart into every word, every second, every syllable of a song.”

Erika Van Pelt:   “Being a deejay and gigging with a band for so long.”

Heejun Han:   First, he says it’s his charm.  Then he changes his mind.  “I don’t have any edge,” he says.  “I’m pretty sure.”

Hollie Cavanagh:    “I’m kinda small and, when I come up to the microphone, I’m kind of timid.  And I look  like I’m 12. And people are like, ‘Ah, yeah, OK.”   And then, I’m like, ‘Boom,'” surprising them with her big voice.

Jermaine Jones:   “My size and the way I carry myself is to my advantage,” he says, explaining that at 6-foot8 1/2, he commands the stage just by walking onto it.

Joshua Ledet:    He says his vibe and the way he pours his emotion into his music sets him apart.

Jessica Sanchez:   She points to her experience on stage.  Yes, she’s only 16, but she was on “America’s Got Talent” back in 2006.  And Whitney’s “I Will Always Love You?”  There’s a YouTube video of her performing that song at age 12.

Phillip Phillips:   He points to his knack for “changing up” the songs he sings.  “I just want to be myself and have fun out there.”

Shannon Magrane:  “Aside from being tall, I like to surprise people (with her performances).”

Skylar Laine:   Well, for starters, she notes that she’s the only country singer left , which she finds surprising considering there were at least three others in the semifinals.
