Five years ago, Jessie Lawrence nabbed a golden ticket on American Idol.

Now he’s back on the singing show scene. having snagged a spot on Season 17 of The Voice.

The 31-year-old from Newark, N.J., accomplished that with a heartfelt version of O-Town’s “All of Nothing.”

His performance prompted a chair turn from Gwen Stefani and earned him a spot on Team Gwen.

Here’s what Jessie told Voice Views about his blind audition experience.

Voice Views: How did you wind up auditioning for The Voice Season 17 and what prompted you to do it?

Jessie: I wound up auditioning for The Voice in New York because I heard that they were coming and it’s been a long time since they came there so I decided to roll the dice and audition.

Voice Views: Why did you choose “All or Nothing” for your audition song?

Jessie: I chose that song firstly because I saw the making of the band with O-town and I love that song and group. Secondly, it sums up a little of how I make decisions concerning my life and everything in it because of what I went through in the past.

Voice Views: How do you feel about being matched up with Team Gwen?

Jessie: The way that I feel being matched up with Gwen is pure delight because I feel like she will get where I’m coming from as far as my grittiness in performing and in my voice.

Voice Views: Have you ever released music, or do you plan to? And, if so, can you tell me about that?

Jessie: I have released music before but they were underground singles and since then I’ve just recorded with no plan on how I would put them out except for YouTube. I’m trying to figure out how to make that a little bit bigger than just social media platforms.
