Joey Cook stays true to form in her debut music video

you expected a conventional debut music video from Joey Cook?

Then clearly you weren’t paying very close attention to her ukulele-playing, hair-color-changing, song-rearranging journey on Season 14 of American Idol.

One of the more original and quirkiest singers ever to grace the Idol stage, Joey stays true to form on “Bones,” her post-show debut single.

In the video for the song, she parades down a New Orleans street in skeleton makeup, from her feet to the roots of her bright blue hair.

You might call it haunting with a capital H. And, yep, that’s Joey’s Season 14 friend and colleague Quentin Alexander in the video as well.

Released earlier this month, “Bones” is the lead single from Joey’s upcoming album, “The Variety Show,” which she hopes to release in May.

And in a recent radio interview, Joey said she was thrilled by the reception to the song, which cracked the Top 20 on iTunes’ jazz singles chart.

“We mainly focused on the video for this song,” she said. “We didn’t expect much to happen on iTunes with it.”

You’ll note that the song is by Joey Cook and the Partyraddlers. That’s the name of Joey’s band, which she says essentially came together when she combined two friends’ bands that she “liked the most.”

She explains that she “was spoiled” while surrounded by Rickey Minor and the other amazing musicians when she performed on Idol; she wound up finishing seventh on Season 14. So one of the first things she wanted to do post-show was put together a band so it wouldn’t be just her playing ukulele or accordion like in her street musician days.

Then there’s the album, of course. An indiegogo campaign raised $14,000 toward its completion. Joey says the album consists of songs “I’ve had forever” and that, since it’s an independent release, she’s been involved in every step along the way.

“This is 100 percent me,” she says.

Since Idol, Joey has also toured and recorded with Post Modern Jukebox. In fact, she’s the featured vocalist on three PMJ tracks available through iTunes, including “Hey There Delilah.”
