Jonathan Mouton was the first singer to join Team John Legend for Season 21.

He wound up earning the last save of the Season 21 battle rounds.

It came from Blake Shelton after John declared Parris Winningham the winner of his battle match with Jonathan.

Also advancing during Tuesday’s show were Ryleigh Plank, Berritt Haynes and The Cunningham Sisters.

The Voice knockout round begins next week.

Here’s a recap of Tuesday’s show.

WELL-DESERVED OUTCOME

Team Legend

The match: Paris Winningham vs. Jonathan Mouton for Team Legend
The song: Luther Vandross’ “Here and Now”
The feedback: None of the coaches expressed a preference, praising both singers. Ariana called them both “world-class” singers.
The outcome: Parris was declared the winner. John said he loves Paris’s energy on stage. Jonathan was stolen by Blake, who said he would have stolen whichever singer John didn’t advance.
My take: This was one of the better battles we witnessed in Season 21; the last 45 seconds were especially brilliant. So seeing both singers advance was the perfect outcome.

THE COACHES GOT IT RIGHT

Team Ariana

The match: Ryleigh Plank vs. KCK3 for Team Ariana
The song: “Come On Over Baby” by Christina Aguilera
The feedback: John and Kelly both praised the joy and attitude Ryleigh brought to the stage. Blake said she attacked and owned the moment.
The outcome: Ryleigh was named the winner; KCK3 was eliminated
My take: KCK3 showed potential, but stumbled a bit early in this performance. Ryleigh never stumbled and was responsible for most of the vocal highlights during the performance.

Team Kelly

The match: The Cunningham Sisters vs. Parker McKay for Team Kelly
The song: “It’s My Party” by Lesley Gore
The feedback: All three coaches gave the edge to The Cunningham Sisters, though John added that he did so a bit hesitantly because Parker delivered the best solo vocal of the battle.
The outcome: The Cunningham Sisters were declared winners; Parker was eliminated.
My take: John got it right. Parker’s vocal was impressive and came complete with a bit of a growl in her voice. But it’s difficult to fault Kelly for advancing The Cunningham Sisters because they seem much more advanced that many of the sibling duos / groups we’ve seen on The Voice in recent seasons.

MONTAGED

Team Blake

The match: Berritt Haynes vs. Kaitlyn Velez for Team Blake
The song: “Yellow” by Coldplay
The feedback: The match was montaged so we heard very little of it. Blake complimented Berritt on an “incredible performance.”
The outcome: Berritt was declared the winner; Kaitlyn was eliminated.
My take: We heard so little, it’s impossible to knew where the outcome was merited. But Kaitlyn Velez was one of my favorite female singer-songwriters and already has music out. So do yourself a favor and check it out!
