Meet Charlotte Sometimes of The Voice (Team Blake)

First off, her real name is not Charlotte Sometimes.

It’s Jessica Charlotte Poland; the stage name came from a 1969 children’s book about a girl transported 40 years back in time.

And, today, the 23-year-old Brooklyn resident considers herself fortunate that she can compete on a show like The Voice.

As we heard in her pre-audition interview, she was diagnosed with a degenerative bone disease when she was a teenager, about two years after she started playing and writing music.

It affected her jaw, and threatened her ability to talk and sing. She underwent surgery and spent five months with her jaw wired shut.

During that time, she wrote songs with her guitar and hummed along. “That’s how I got through it,” she told The Voice.

By 19, she had recovered and released a debut album called “Waves and Both of Us” through Geffen Records. That 2008 release was followed up by EPs in 2010 (“Sideways) and last year (“The Wait”).

In the bio on her website, she says the latter is most satisfying because it’s her first truly adult work.

“The songs are very diverse,” she says of the five-track EP. “But if I had to pick a central theme, I think it’s really about that difficult lesson all women struggle through on the path from adolescence to adulthood — learning to finally love yourself instead of wandering around looking for someone else to validate your worth.”

Charlotte says she tried out for The Voice because she considered it the “one of the coolest competitions around,” partly because of the diverse talent it welcomes, partly because the judges are all relevant artists today.

The admiration is apparently mutual. All four judges turned around for Charlotte’s version of “Apologize.” She then went on to defeat fellow Team Blake member Lex Land in the battle rounds to earn a spot on the live shows.

As for her music, it’s classified as pop, but Charlotte puts it a more colorful way.

“It you took Brandi Carlise, mixed with Fiona Apple and One Republic, you’d get me,” she says in her interview with The Voice. “So I’m like the meathead Jersey chick.”
