Season 4, The Voice

Night 4 of the battle rounds on The Voice

0

Just one night of battle rounds remains on Season 4 of The Voice.

And these match-ups will be pretty much do or die for the singers in terms of the competition.

Only one save remains, meaning the loser in five of the six battles will automatically go home.

Among the contestants yet to compete are the Morgan Twins — Cara and Rhian — of Team Blake.

They’ll try to continue the success of Midas Whale and the Swon Brothers, the first two duets to ever advance beyond the battle rounds on the show.

If you want to check out profiles and pre-show music from the contestants who will perform tonight, here are the links.

Battle 1:

Brandon Roush

Brandon Roush

Shawna P.

Shawna P.

Brandon Roush vs. Shawna P. (Team Shakira): Brandon is lead vocalist of The Dirty Grindstone. Shawna P. is a veteran of the Muzik Mafia who released a 2011 album “EarthFunk Muzik” as Shawna P and The EarthFunk Tribe. Shakira has them singing Janis Joplin’s “Piece of My Heart.” The song should be a snap for Shawna P.  Not so sure about Brandon. Shawna, the oldest remaining singer in the competition, admits she’d be very frustrated to lose to a 19-year-old. Brandon wants to show the autistic kids he teaches in music to always follow their dreams. Shawna P. sounds like she was born to sing this song. Brandon looks a little bit afflicted, the way he’s bounding all over the stage. Both poured everything they had into that performance vocally. I’d pick Shawna.

Shakira picks Shawna. Brandon does not get saved.

Battle 2

Duncan Kanakama

Duncan Kanakama

Sarah Simmons

Sarah Simmons

Duncan Kamakana vs. Sarah Simmons (Team Adam): Sarah turned all four chairs around with her blind audition. We didn’t see much of Duncan’s audition. His dad was a folk singer in Hawaii; Duncan describes his music as alternative with soul influences. Sarah dropped out of music school to pursue her passion for music on The Voice. They’ll sing Lady Antebellum’s “Wanted You More.” During their rehearsals, Adam doesn’t quite seem satisfied with the progress his singers are making. But, judging from the pre-commercial promo, it’s going to turn out just fine. Not thrilled with Duncan’s voice, but he’s got a look the ladies will love. And he plays guitar. And he’s only 25. He probably could have won Idol. But what’s with the smile throughout what’s supposed to be a sad love song? Sarah sounds very good, reminding us why she turned four chairs in the audition. I’d pick Sarah.

Adam picks Sarah. Duncan is not stolen.

Now, montage time …

Amy Whitcomb defeated Agina Alvarez from Team Adam, singing “Heartbreaker.”

Justin Rivers defeated The Morgan Twins on Team Blake.

Michelle Chamuel defeated Chelsea M. on Team Usher singing “Titanium.”

Battle 6

Mary Miranda

Mary Miranda

Cathia

Cathia

Cathia vs. Mary Miranda (Team Shakira): Cathia is the 19-year-old who came from El Salvador with her mother and sang her entire blind audition song in Spanish. She’s a graduate of the LaGuardia Performing Arts High School. Mary, 17, moved to the U.S. from Cuba and also auditioned with a song in Spanish. She previously competed on “Tento Talento, Mucho Talenot,” a Spanish-speaking “America’s Got Talent” type of show. They’re being asked to sing a Shakira song, “Antes de Las Seis.” Mary doesn’t know it and is struggling with the song in the early rehearsal. But by the time of the final rehearsal, she seems to have recovered. Cathia says she’s determined to show Shakira she’s the singer to pick, and she starts wonderfully and hits an incredible note early in the song. But Mary has a very appealing, youthful voice, not to mention the look of a star. Adam says he’d pick Mary; Blake says he’d pick Cathia. I’d pick Mary.

Shakira picks Mary. But there’s not a tone of suspense here because there’s one steal left and this is the last battle, meaning Cathia will be stolen by Usher.
