Two more singers earned the coveted four-chair turn-arounds on The Voice Tuesday night.
And both wound up joining Team Adam Levine, who is certainly stockpiling a squad capable of ending Blake Shelton’s Voice winning streak at three seasons.
The latest four-chair turn acquisitions for Adam include James Irwin, a 31-year-old rocker who tried out in Season 3 but failed to land a spot on the show; and Ashley Dubose, a 23-year-old who’s been trying to juggle a full-time job and music with being a single mom.
In earlier audition episodes, Tessanne Chin and James Wolpert chose Team Adam after convincing all four judges to turn their chairs. The only other contestants to do that so far are Holly Henry of Team Blake and Matthew Schuler of Team Christina.
Here’s a look at the contestants we met Tuesday night.
Will Champlin, 30, Reseda, Calif.
Background: He’s the son of a member of Chicago and says his father inspired him as a musician. Will says he’s always been a working musician and would like to provide for his wife and child in “a much bigger way.” His dad, Bill, says his son has written some “gorgeous songs.”
Song: “Not Over You” by Gavin DeGraw
Performance: I’m not a fan of the white-framed glasses, but Will sounds like a solid male vocalist. Then his voice hits the stratosphere on a note midway through the song. All in all, a solid performance. Perhaps better than any guy we heard last night. Grade: B
Chairs: Blake turns midway through the song; the big note prompts Cee Lo and Adam to join him.
Judges’ reaction: Blake praises his power and passion, plus his “cool style.” Adam says Will’s performance got “more and more intense in a really cool way.”
His choice: Will picks Team Adam.
Macey Estes, 18, Greenwood, Ind.
Background: She says she’s had music around her for her entire life. Both her mother and sister sang, but Macey says she was initially too shy to follow in their footsteps. Eventually, she joined show choir in high school. But she says she’s also into hip-hop, rap and pop and has decided to delay college to try her hand at music professionally.
Song: “The Way”
Performance: Macey starts off with a convincing little rap. She’s got a big voice, but she’s also veering off course a few times. Grade: C
Chairs: She couldn’t turn one.
Judges’ reaction: The judges praise Macey on her potential. But Christina says she was waiting for a moment that didn’t arrive. They ask Macey to rap, and dole out big compliments for that.
Stephanie Anne Johnson, 29, Tacoma, Wash.
Background: She says her whole family introduced her to different types of music — from gospel to rock to the blues. She has also studied opera and classical voice. After college, she got a job at a day care, but then ditched that for work singing aboard a cruise ship in Alaska. She says she’s at sea eight months out of the year and misses out on being a part of her family’s lives. “I’m ready to get back on land,” Stephanie Anne says.
Song: “Black Horse and a Cherry Tree”
Performance: Stephanie Anne has a bit of uniqueness to her singing voice, and she’s throwing in a couple of wrinkles to make the song her own. And that was before unleashing a pretty novel ending. Grade: B-
Chairs: About midway through the song, Cee Lo and Christina turned around almost simultaneously.
Judges’ reaction: Cee Lo says he heard “soul and conviction” in her voice. Turns out this contestant went to school with former Cee Lo contestant Vicci Martinez. Christina says she was taken with Stephanie Anne’s energy.
Her choice: Stephanie Anne joins Team Christina.
Sam Cerniglia, 25, Chicago, Ill.
Background: He works in customer service with Groupon but also plays with a band that performs at weddings and corporate events. He has two sisters with debilitating diseases, but says they continue to encourage him to follow his dream.
Song: “It’s a Beautiful Day” by Michael Buble
Performance: More of a throw-back male vocalist. He turns in a solid if unspectacular performance, but ends on a strong note. Give him credit for not getting flustered as he got deep into the performance without seeing a chair turn. Grade: C+
Chairs: Blake and Cee Lo turn around late in the song.
Judges’ reaction: Cee Lo calls his sound “sophisticated.” Blake says he loves his range, sound and style and compliments Sam for taking him “to a Michael Buble concert.”
His choice: Sam decides to join Team Blake.
Jennifer Newberry, 32, Seattle, Wash.
Background: Jennifer is from Sweden. Her dad was an exchange student in Sweden when he met Jennifer’s mom. The couple later divorced, and Jennifer said she would travel to the states to be with her dad. Music helped her connect to the U.S. When she was 21, she says, she took $300 and moved from Sweden to the U.S. She would perform in casinos, but says that wasn’t very fulfilling.
Song: “Locked Out of Heaven” by Bruno Mars
Performance: OK, I’m not a fan of Jennifer’s version of this song. And she veered off pitch frequently. Grade: C-
Chairs: None of the judges turn around.
Judges’ reaction: Both Christina and Blake suggest that she might have selected the wrong song for her audition or else should have changed the song up more.
James Irwin, 31, St. Louis, Missouri
Background: James tried out for Season 4 and didn’t turn a chair. He’s the guy who was giving music a second chance after being discouraged by the death of his twin daughters just minutes after they were born. Since the audition, James said he gave up side jobs to focus on his music. He and his wife also now have a young son.
Song: “Losing My Religion” by R.E.M.
Performance: This time, James shows up on stage with an original version of the R.E.M. hit. And he delivers a sensational opening, then slips into rock mode and continues a solid performance. Very good rock voice. Grade: B
Chairs: All four chairs spin in a heartbeat.
Judges’ reaction: Cee Lo says he was moved by James’ version of the song. Blake says James is ready for “this thing now, ready to win this thing now.” Christina likes the fact that James sounds vocally versatile.
His choice: James joins Team Adam.
Olivia Henken, 25, Louisville, Ky.
Background: Olivia first performed on stage at age 4 and says she’s been singing non-stop since then, trying to get recognized. She says she’s entered more than 100 singing competitions and gets a little frustrated because she’s had trouble reaching the next level in music. While awaiting her big break, she’s working as a tax preparer with her grandmother and mother.
Song: “Two Black Cadillacs”
Performance: Olivia starts off strong on the Carrie Underwood hit, even if it sounds more like an imitation than an original version of the song. Dang, I like this young lady’s voice. Dang, she sang lights out on that song. Just wish she had changed it up a bit more. Grade: B+
Chairs: Christina spins quickly, followed by Cee Lo late in the competition.
Judges’ reaction: Christina says she loves the power in Olivia’s voice. Cee Lo promises to challenge Olivia and shake her out of the country genre.
Her choice: Olivia decides to join Team Christina
Jason Kertson, 16, Seattle, Wash.
Background: When he was 7 years old, he got into trouble in school and got grounded for three weeks. He had his dad teach him how to play guitar, and then got obsessed with music. Then Jason got the idea of trying to play two guitars at the same time. He describes himself as a rock guy with a gritty voice.
Song: “Lips of an Angel” by Hinder
Performance: Crystal clear, impressive opening. All in all, I thought that was a solid performance. I’m quite surprised no one turned around. Of course, the judges seemed surprised by Jason’s youth.
Chairs: No one turns.
Judges’ reaction: The judges compliment Jason for sounding so good at such a young age and encourage him to try out for The Voice again.
R. Anthony, 33, Tampa, Fla.
Background: R. says he was part of an up-and-coming gospel group, until his wife got pregnant. So he “shut down shop” and got a real job. Now he and his wife have decided it’s time for him to try music again. And this time, it will be as a solo act.
Song: “Hall of Fame” by The Script
Performance: Overall nice performance from R. Anthony. You can hear the gospel in his voice as it soars during the song. Grade: B-
Chairs: Christina turned in the middle of the song. Cee Lo joined her at the very last moment.
Judges’ reaction: Christina compliments the soul in his voice. Cee Lo says he didn’t turn around at the last minute because he was indecisive. He said he was simply enjoying the performance.
His choice: R. Anthony joins Team Cee Lo.
Here come the singers we’ll barely get to meet.
Keaira Lashae also joined Team Cee Lo after performing “Killing Me Softly with His Song”
Amber Nicole joined Team Christina after singing “Russian Roulette.”
Emily Randolph joined Team Blake after singing “Every Rose Has Its Thorn.”
Justin Chain, 23, Fort Payne, Ala.
Background: His mom and dad sang all the time, and Justin said he just picked it up naturally. For a while, he hoped to become a singer, but then turned his focus to sports. He planned to play in college before he was involved in a serious motorcycle accident in 2009. That turned his attention back to music.
Song: “She’s Country”
Backgound: Justin launches into the Jason Aldean hit with a dash of attitude. He’s turning in a perfectly fine performance, but never quite created a moment on The Voice stage. Grade: C+
Chairs: Blake turns around early in the performance, but the other coaches opt not to compete with him.
Judges’ reaction: Blake expresses surprise that no one else turned a chair and calls Justin’s pitch “amazing.”
His choice: No choice as Justin joins Team Blake, a decision he says he would have made anyway unless another coach “blew my mind.”
Ashley Dubose, 23, St. Paul, Minn.
Background: Ashley says music was her childhood dream. Her mother was proud of her and made her sing for friends and relatives. Ashley is now a single mom with a full-time job who pursues music in her spare time. “I definitely feel like I’m spreading myself thin,” Ashley says, breaking down into tears.
Song: “Diamonds”
Performance: OK, it’s immediately clear The Voice saved the best vocalist of the night for last. Ashley sounds great. She sounds unique. Her voice soars on the big notes. From start to finish, that was the night’s best performance. Grade: A
Chairs: All four judges had turned around before Ashley reached the midway point in the song.
Judges’ reaction: Cee Lo says Ashley did justice to a Rihanna song and he’d love to eventually root for her from the front row at the Grammys. Adam says her voice cut through the room like a razor. Christina said she kept waiting for a flaw in the performance and couldn’t find one.
Her choice: Ashley decides to join Team Adam.
