That was in the fall of 2014. But with the exception of a 2015 single, fans heard little from Sugar again until last summer.
That’s when she started releasing a string of soulful, pop-R&B singles, the fifth of which is called “No Patience”“No Patience” and dropped Friday.
Sugar calls the song “my actual baby,” adding that she worked for more than a year to perfect the single.
Here’s what Sugar told Voice Views about her smooth new song and her progression as an artist since The Voice.
Voice Views: You appeared on The Voice back in 2014 and I wrote about a single you released called “NVR” shortly afterward, but fans didn’t hear much else in terms of new music for a long time. What were you doing musically during that period?
Sugar: Honestly, I was spending a lot of time just trying to find myself. I was going through some personal things and needed to learn to love myself. I dug deep, and did that.
Voice Views: That said, beginning last summer, you re-emerged. “No Patience” is your fifth single since. What sparked that re-emergence?
Sugar: I surrounded myself with an amazing team and people I felt comfortable creating with. I was finally in a place emotionally where I was able to find my voice as far as songwriting, and the songs just came flooding out of me.
Voice Views: Can you tell me about “No Patience?” Who wrote the song? The story behind it? Why did you decide to make it your next release?
Sugar: I wrote this song with my best friend, Svē. We met at Berklee College of Music and stayed in touch. She came to visit LA on a trip and we got in the studio and pumped out the song in three hours. It was magical. We worked on the instrumentation and production on the song for about a year to perfect it. And it was the first song in a series of many that we have written for my project.
Voice Views: And how have you been coping during this pandemic period, when it’s especially difficult for artists who, I’m sure, would love to be out in public promoting and performing their music?
Sugar: It’s been a pretty weird time for everyone I think. Some days I’m flying high and some days I’m really low emotionally … I have just been trying to stay as productive as possible and make art every single day.
