If the song choices go south Wednesday night on American Idol, we won’t be able to blame producers.
And we certainly won’t be able to blame the person doing the singing.
We’ll be blaming their competitors.
In one of the more unique themes Idol has come up with over the years, each fellow contestant will suggest a song for each singer this week on Idol.
That means each member of the Top 7 should have six songs from which to choose.
Sounds like the perfect opportunity for sabotage, but I expect the contestants to play nice.
And I doubt anyone will suggest someone sing “Islands in the Stream.”
Oh, I forgot. We might still be able to blame producers for the songs selected for Wednesday’s group numbers.
On with this week’s rankings.
1. Jena Irene Asciutto (1): Hey, I have a great idea. Jena is a lovely young lady. Why not surround her with adoring young males, stricken by her beauty? I mean, shouldn’t Idol play fair? Actually, Jena long ago proved she doesn’t need such gimmicks to impress.
2. Caleb Johnson (2): Speaking of impressing, Caleb went soft for the first time last week and certainly did so. He even chose a song (“Faithfully”) that also allowed him to show off his booming voice. And just to prove that Caleb and Jena are the cream of this year’s Idol crop, we were treated to the best duet yet when they took that stage together.
3. Jess Meuse (3): If Jess could just cut loose on stage, she’d be a contender to win this thing. Hold it: She’s never landed in the bottom three. Maybe she is a contender. Her “Call Me” was fine vocally, but Jennifer was right for suggesting it needed more attitude.
4. Alex Preston (4): He’s nipping at Jessica’s heels and would probably have passed her if I enjoyed his vocals a bit more. But he’s a hit with fans. For two straight weeks, his performances have done better than any other contestant’s on iTunes.
5. Dexter Roberts (5): I feel like there’s a pretty big gap between number four and number five on this list. That said, Dexter has been solid the last two weeks, and could pick up even more support from country voters if C.J. is eliminated soon.
6. Sam Woolf (7): All the special treatment earned Sam another week on the show and kept him out of the bottom two, but I was left wondering where he would be if a bottom three was revealed. At this point, he deserves to outlast C.J., but none of the other finalists still standing.
7. C.J. Harris (8): He took the stage twice last week. He turned in two performances Idol viewers should never have to endure again. That about sums up C.J.’s week on Idol and explains why he and those pitch problems need to go home. Like this week.
