Scotty McCreery’s sophomore album is due to hit stores and download sites Tuesday.
And the Season 10 winner of American Idol is getting solid reviews for “See You Tonight.”
What that will mean in terms of sales, of course, remains to be seen.
The lead single by the same name was released in May, peaked at number 86 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and didn’t exactly zip its way up the country singles charts.
And “See You Tonight” has a tough act to follow.
Scotty’s first album, “Clear as Day,” debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, the first album from an Idol winner to do that since Ruben Studdard’s “Soulful” in 2006.
And “Clear As Day” has gone platinum, marking 1 million in sales.
As for the “See You Tonight” reviews — here’s what people have to say.
Billboard: Gives the album an 81 out of 100 and provides a song-by-song review. Noting that his first album had to be completed in a hurry to capitalize on his Idol fame, the site says: “For his follow-up, he (along with producers Frank Rogers and Mark Bright) had time to stretch his musical wings in the studio … How did they do? Very well, to be honest.”
Roughstock.com: Gives Scotty 4.5 stars out of 5, saying “The baker’s dozen tracks that fill ‘See You Tonight’ show a remarkable amount of growth and maturity for the young star. And ‘See You Tonight’ showcases that Scotty McCreery is more than just a moderately talented guy who won a TV show. Like Carrie Underwood, he knows how to pick (and write) songs that suit him.”
USA Today: Gives Scotty 3 out of 4, writing “he’s maturing into a fine singer.”
Great American Country: Doesn’t supply a rating, but writes: “While ‘See You Tonight’ features a more progressive sound than Scotty’s first release, it also displays an older and wiser perspective. Life might be full of parties and co-eds in college, but Scotty also shows that a growing maturity can come with the territory as well. And on ‘See You Tonight,’ Scotty balances both with an authentic and honest feel.”
Los Angeles Times: Gives Scotty 2.5 stars out of 4. Noting the number of hookup songs on the album, the reviewer writes: “The boy next door has definitely left the building.”
