And, in the same episode, The Voice kicked off the Season 22 battle rounds with a match between Austin Montgomery, 19, and Tanner Fussell, 26, of Team Blake Shelton.
After getting guidance from Blake and team mentor Jimmy Allen, they turned in a brilliant performance of Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues” that had all of the coaches raving.
The episode ended before Blake revealed his choice of a winner. Or before any of the other coaches had a chance to steal the losing artist. You’ll have to tune in Tuesday to find out who survived.
In the blind audition portion of the show, Kim Cruse became the 10th of the 56 Season 22 contestants to earn a four-chair turn and the fourth four-chair turn artist to join Team John Legend.
She joins Omar Jose Cordona , Morgan Taylor and Parijita Bastola as the four-chair turns on Team Legend.
Camila Cabello also has four four-chair turns on her team. Blake Shelton has two. Gwen Stefani failed to land a single four-chair turn during the blinds.
Here’s a recap of Monday’s show. Following the links will take you to profiles of each artist. You can learn about music several of them have already released.
BEST OF THE NIGHT
Rowan Grace, 16, of Rapid City, S.D., “Traitor” by Olivia Rodrigo: Rowan’s tone immediately impresses, prompting quick chair turns from John Legend and Gwen Stefanie. Rowan’s impressive vocal ultimately got Camila Cabbello to turn as well. Gwen praised the emotion Rowan put into the performance. John also loved her connection with the song. Camila said Rowan reminds her of Olivia Rodrigo. Rowan opted to join Team Gwen.
RUNNERS-UP
Constance Howard, 27, of Katy, Texas, “Peaches” by Justin Bieber: Constance’s impressive opening turned Camila Cabello’s chair in a heartbeat. A whistle note enticed John Legend to follow. And before the song ended, Constance did it again. Camila said she loves Constance’s tone. John called her voice “special” and loved the way she made the song her own. Constance joined Team Camila, filling her team.
Kim Cruse, 30, of Woodville, Texas, “Best Part” by Daniel Caesar with H.E.R.: Kim’s vocals enticed an early chair turn from John Legend. Her vocal acrobatics eventually turned the chair of every other coach as well. Gwen called her performance “so beautiful.” John said she’s so good she should be on the finale. Kim decided to join Team Legend.
ALSO MADE THE SHOW
Steve McMorran, 40, of Nashville, Tenn., “Never Enough” from The Greatest Showman: Steve shows off great range and he’s midway through the chorus when Camila Cabello turns. Not sure he landed some of the big notes after that, and that might be why she was the only turn. Camila loved the risk he took on his blind audition song choice.
Justin Aaron, 34, of Junction City, Kansas, “Glory” by Common and John Legend: Justin unleashed a powerful and emotional vocal. Gwen Stefani turned well into the performance. But no one else didn’t turn. Gwen said she didn’t know “why the whole world wouldn’t turn for that.” John said he has a “beautiful voice.” Gwen said she was mesmerized by Justin’s eprformance. That fills Gwen’s team.
Jaeden Luke, 22, of Wash., “Make It With You” by Bread: Jaeden’s acoustic performance of the song earned chair turns from John Legend and Blake Shelton, the only coaches with spots left on their teams. John said he has a mesmerizing vibe. Camila called his voice special. Jaeden decided to join Team Blake. That completes Team Blake.
Nia Skyfer, 26 of Miami, Fla., “Bam Bam” by Camila Cabello: John can’t see her, but Nia is showing off some great stage presence on this. Nia was nearing the end of the performance when John turned at Camila’s recommendation. Camila loves her energy. John loved her charisma. And Nia completed Team Legend and the Season 22 roster for The Voice.
NO CHAIR TURNS
Yelka, 20, of San Diego, Calif., “No Me Queda Mas” by Selena: She failed to turn a chair and I continue to be amazed by the number of singers the show has featured who didn’t turn a chair while montaging others who did.
August James, 21, Chatsworth, Calif., “Heart of Glass” by Blondie: Yikes. That vocal had its moments but was also a little all over the place. The Voice scores an F for introducing us to so many non-contestants and still montaging real contestants in Season 22.
