Nine artists earned spots on The Voice Monday night as the show kicked off its 26th season.
Four of those artists — Sofronio Vasquez, Jake Tankersley, Danny Joseph and Sydney Sterlace — turned four chairs.
As it turned out, each of the Season 26 coaches — Reba McEntire, Gwen Stefani and new coaches Michael Buble and Snoop Dogg — wound up landing one of those artists.
Meanwhile, The Voice unveiled a new gimmick for Season 26, a replay button that allows the coaches to change their mind if no one turns for a singer.
Reba became the first coach to use hers during Monday’s show, landing Kendall Eugene, who had turned in an audition that was certainly worthy of a turn from someone.
Here’s a recap of Monday’s show, with Voice Views’ picks for the night’s best performances:
BEST OF THE NIGHT
Sofronio Vasquez, 31, The Philippines, “I’m Going Down” by Mary J. Blige: Sofronio’s strong opening prompted an immediate chair turn from Snoop Dogg. Michael Buble, Reba McEntire and Gwen Stefani soon followed, giving Sofronio a four-chair turn long before he completed a very strong audition. Reba complimented him on a voice that’s like butter and loved his soulful sound. Gwen called it a Grammy performance. Michael said the performance made him emotional. Snoop encouraged him to “get in where you fit in.” In other words, with the coach with a background in soul music. But Sofronio opted to join Team Buble.
RUNNERS-UP
Jake Tankersley, 31, Claremore, Okla., “”Something in the Orange” by Zach Bryan: His deep voice enticed quick chair turns from Gwen Stefani and Michael Buble. Reba turned too, only to learn she’d been blocked by Gwen. Michael Buble then turned, giving Jake a very well deserved first four-chair turn of Season 26. Snoop encouraged him to “shake up the world” by joining his team. Gwen complimented Jake on his low, gravely voice. Michael noted that he co-wrote one of Blake Shelton’s hit songs. Jake opted to join Team Snoop Dogg.
Sydney Sterlace, 15, Buffalo, N.Y., “Drivers License” by Olivia Rodrigo: Her opening sparked quick chair turns from Michael Buble and Gwen Stefani. The young singer is showing nice showmanship in spite of her younth. She gets chair turns from Gwen Stefani and Reba McEntire too, giving her four chairs. Then Sydney showed off even more vocal skills on an excellent ending. Snoop said she captivated him like he’d been in church and said he hasn’t heard anyone who sounded as good as her. Gwen promised to be Sydney’s “cool mom” and promised to name her new kitten Sydney. Reba said she might be her “grandmom.” Sydney decided to join Team Gwen.
ALSO MADE THE SHOW
ChrisDeo, 16, Queens, N.Y., “I Won’t Give Up” by Jason Mraz: Wow, Chris showed off a lovely tone from the word go. Snoop Dogg turned in a heartbeat. She hit a couple pitchy spots after that, but still got a last-second chair turn from Michael Buble. The coaches’ reaction brought tears from Chrisdeo, who said she often deals with rude people when busking. Gwen called her voice angelic. Michael loved her raw emotion and said he can relate to her busking experience. Snoop said he wants to see Chrisdeo crying tears of happiness. Chrisdeo joined Team Snoop Dogg.
Kiara Vega, 18, Tampa, Fla.,“Amor Eterno”: She’s singing in Spanish. Her impressive tone prompts quick chair turns from Michael Buble and Snoop Dogg. As Kiara’s vocals swelled, Reba McEntire turned as well. Michael complimented her on a beautiful voice and said he enjoyed every moment of the performance. Reba said the performance touched her heart. Kiara opted to join Team Buble. Michael called it a “massive win” for his team.
Kendall Eugene, 37, Fort Worth, Texas, “Don’t Think Jesus” by Morgan Wallace: Kendall shows off a nice country voice on his opening and hit a nice high note midway through the performance. No one turned in spite of a strong ending by Kendall. Reba McEntire said she liked everything it and doesn’t know why she didn’t turn. Then she hit her coach replay button to give Kendall a spot on the show.
Torre Blake, Austin, Texas, “On and On” by Erykah Badu: She started off the song displaying silky and soulful vocals. That enticed a chair turn from Snoop Dogg. Gwen Stefani joined him midway through the performance. Michael loved her voice, but said he didn’t want to go head to head with Snoop Dogg to land her. Gwen liked her airy tone. Snoop said she’s smooth, just like him, and that her voice was “comforting to my ears.” Torre decided to join Team Snoop.
Danny Joseph, 37, Dallas, Texas, “I Put a Spell on You” by Screamin’ Jay Hawkins: Unique opening to the song prompted chair turns from Snoop Dogg, Reba McEntire and Michael Buble. But Michael is blocked by Snoop Dogg. Meanwhile, Danny turns in a solid rock performance. Late in the performance, Gwen Stefani turned as well, making Danny the third four-chair turn of Season 26. Reba complimented him on an amazing range and a powerful voice. Snoop turned the lights out on all the other coaches in hopes of luring Danny to his team. Danny decided to join Team Reba.
Jan Dan, 29, Newark, N.J., “Almost Doesn’t Count” by Brandy: Jan’s tone got immediate chair turns from Michael Buble and Gwen Stefani. Instead of making her pitch from her big red chair, Gwen Stefani approached the stage to give Jan Dan a lesson in making eye contact with his audience. Michael was so impressed, he barely made a pitch for Jan Dan. Jan Dan chose to join Team Gwen Stefani.
