Adam Lambert says his 2nd album will be out in 2012

We might get a new single from Adam Lambert in the not-too-distant future.

We won’t be getting a new album in 2011, at least not based on the tweets Idol’s season eight runner-up sent out last week.

Tidbit #1:   “FYI I’m working hard this week and next to finish up all these amazing new tunes! Thank you all for staying patient… I’m excited too!”

Tidbit #2:   “I’m 90% sure the first single will be out next month (ish) 🙂 album coming early 2012!”

Tidbit #3:  “There is still lots of work to be done but I promise: you won’t be disappointed!”

Earlier this year, Adam had indicated he might release his sophomore CD before the end of the year. As recently as Aug. 27, he told fans he was finishing the vocals on three different singles.

But who can blame Adam for taking his time with that second album?

After all, the list of second albums from Idol finalists that have been commercial flops is a lot longer than the list of those that have been commercial successes.

Witness the lack of chart success for second albums from David Cook and David Archuleta. And they were one of the most talented finalist tandems to grace the Idol stage.

Of course, Adam did deliver one CD this year — “Glam Nation Live” — released back in March. Nine months into the year, I still think it’s the best full-length Idol album we’ve gotten in 2011. You can check out my mini reviews of all of them here.

Meanwhile, you’ll have two chances to catch Adam on TV in non-singing roles in the not-too-distant future.

According to his fansite, he’ll be a guest judge on Lifetime’s “Project Runway” Thursday at 9 p.m.

And he’s going to serve as a mentor on the Hub Channel’s new “Majors and Minors,” tutoring contestants on performing. The show debuts Friday at 8 p.m. (Comcast Channel 130). No word on whether Adam will appear in the debut episode.

Chart success in the current music industry climate is relative. David Cook’s sophomore album made the Top 30 on HAC and the Top 20 on AC charts. His music (and David Archuleta’s for that matter) is not the current flavor of the month. If you are not auto tuned or hands in the air dance music, very few songs crack the Top 10. Many artists would love to have a song crack the Top 40, let alone 20 or 30. So to say Cook’s album has not had success on the charts is false. TOP 40 IS NOT THE BE ALL TO END ALL. Many artists have a very comfortable career with songs that chart below the top 10.
