Four more artists earned spots in the live playoffs Tuesday night during the knockout round on The Voice.
Hailey Mia, Ryleigh Plank and Samuel Harness were declared winners of their knockout matches by their respective coaches.
David Vogel of Team Ariana also advanced when he was stolen by John Legend.
Entering the final week of knockouts, that means only Blake has a steal remaining in the knockout round.
Here’s a recap of Tuesday’s show.
SURPRISE OF THE NIGHT
Team Kelly
The match: The Cunningham Sisters vs. Hailey Mia
The songs: “Oceans (Where Feet May Fail” by Hillside United for The Cunningham Sisters; “Arcade” by Duncan Laurence for Hailey Mia
The feedback: Blake said he would have given the win to Hailey. Ariana and John seemed to be leaning in that direction too, but praised the performances of all three teens.
The outcome: Kelly declared Hailey the winner. The Cunningham Sisters were eliminated.
My take: The Cunningham Sisters really didn’t do anything wrong. Hailey just did lots right, delivering her song with emotion and delivering repeated glory notes with precision. Then she came back down to earth for a tender ending. Watch out, folks. Kelly has a history of doing very well with young female artists (Brynn Cartelli, Chevel Shepherd). Hailey was 13 when she auditioned.
THE COACH GOT IT WRONG
Team Ariana
The match: Ryleigh Plank vs. David Vogel
The songs: “Lose You to Love Me” by Selena Gomez for Daniel; “Midnight Sky” by Miley Cyrus for Ryleigh
The feedback: John said David gave the best knockout performance of the two, but that Ryleigh has the string of performances on the show. Kelly and Blake both gave the edge to Ryleigh.
The outcome: Ariana complimented Ryleigh on being a “rock star, a pop star, a disco diva” in naming her the winner. John then swooped in and stole David, saying he likes the diversity he’ll bring to Team Legend.
My take: David delivered a fine acoustic version of a Selena Gomez song, putting his own stamp on it in the process. He was the clear winner Tuesday. Ryleigh had been very impressive in the first two rounds, but her knockout vocal didn’t come alive until 1:30 into the song.
THE COACH GOT IT RIGHT
Team Legend
The match: Samuel Harness vs. BrittanyBree
The songs: “Best Part” by H.E.R. and Daniel Caesar for Brittany; “Bruises” by Lewis Capaldi for Samuel
The feedback: Kelly gave the edge to Brittany. Ariana and Blake both thought Samuel won the knockout. Blake said he though Samuel “just had a moment” on the show.
The outcome: John decided to advance Samuel. Brittany was eliminated.
My take: Brittany delivered a wonderful vocal, certainly worthy of a steal. But she probably ran into a numbers problem because Season 21 is loaded with impressive female soul singers. Samuel deserved the win because he delivered a distinctive vocal with emotion, ending the song in tears. I said it before, I’ll say it again: I think he’s the best male vocalist on Season 21.
