Joshua Vacanti was inspired to give singing shows another chance by a Season 19 Voice standout.

That would be Cami Clune, who made it all the way to the semifinals.

Watching her excel on the show helped convince Joshua to try auditioning again.

You might say the decision paid off.

John Legend and Ariana Grande turned for his performance of “Into the Unknown” from Frozen II.

In fact, John was so impressed with Joshua’s vocal that he blocked Ariana, ensuring that Joshua would become a member of Team Legend.

Here’s what the 28-year-old from Lockport, N.Y., told Voice Views about his audition experience.

Voice Views: Had you auditioned for televised singing competitions in the past (other than Joyful Noise). If so, what do you think made the difference this time?

Joshua: Yes, I have tried out for several different competitions with the hope of forming a career. Unfortunately, platforms like The Voice never seemed to quite work out. After a while, I got really discouraged and needed to take a break from competitions for the sake of my own mental health. Hearing “no” so many times can take a toll on your self-esteem.

Everyone says to keep trying and your dreams will come true, but sometimes we need a break to reset. I never gave up on my dreams, but I took some time to really focus on growing as a musician and a person.

I think that time made all the difference. I didn’t realize that I wasn’t ready then. I am a much stronger person and artist now. So to any other artist hoping to make the show, never give up on your dreams and take a break when you need to. When the timing’s right, you’ll know.

Voice Views: How did you wind up auditioning for Season 21 of The Voice?

Joshua:I had watched a friend and former bandmate Cami Clune on season 19. She really inspired me to take a chance and send in an audition tape. From day one of this process, I have tried to remove any pressure on myself and continually focus on the fun and enjoy the experience. No matter what happens, I am just so excited to be here. It’s truly been a journey, and I am ready to soak in every moment.

Voice Views: Why did you decide to perform “Into the Unknown” for your audition song? Is it one you’ve performed often?

Joshua: I chose this song because I love Disney, and I love theater. I think the story perfectly aligned with my journey during the blinds too. Going to LA and auditioning was my own little “Elsa moment.” I also love that the character Elsa celebrates the parts of her that are different from others. Growing up I never quite felt like I fit in, and I really identify with Elsa’s journey of self-love and acceptance.

“Into the Unknown” is also a monster of a song to perform. I knew singing it would be a risk, but believed that it could display some great theatrical moments and my higher range as a singer. I look forward to showing the coaches and viewers at home all the unique parts of my voice and performance abilities.

Voice Views: How would you describe that blind audition experience?

Joshua: I was the most nervous I have ever been in my entire life! I was terrified! I have no memory of singing and didn’t realize that John and Ariana had turned until after my song. If you watch my audition, I bend over in relief after singing because that’s the first time I saw both of them.

I honestly thought no one turned, and it definitely played with my head throughout the performance! No matter what happened during my audition, I am so happy that John and Ariana turned. It blows my mind to think that John Legend believed in me enough to use his block, and that Ariana said she was obsessed with me. Like, what?! It’s a moment I will never forget, and I am so grateful for The Voice to have given me this opportunity.

Voice Views: Did you have a coaching preference heading into the blinds?

Going into the blinds, I would have been happy to be on any coach’s team. Kelly, Blake, John and Ariana are all AMAZING, and I would have jumped at the opportunity to work with them. I’ve always felt connected to Ariana’s music and artistry, so it’s safe to say I completely flipped out when I learned she was going to be a coach. I still can’t believe she turned her chair for me!

In regards to the outcome, I 100% believe that John was the correct choice for me. He is an incredible artist and mentor. Walking off that stage I knew God placed me where I needed to be. John is truly a legend! (Pun intended.) I can’t wait for you to see our work in the battles.
