Khalea Lynee, Destiny Rayne, Ricky Braddy shine on The Voice

The battle round begins next week on The Voice.

And I can already envision lots of Team John Legend artists being stolen.

John, the show’s defending champion coach, landed another four-chair turn during Tuesday’s show in the form of Khalea Lynee.

If you’re counting – and I am – that makes five four-chair turn artists on Team Legend so far.

Meanwhile, Kelly Clarkson has two. Blake has one. And with just one spot left on her team, Gwen Stefani has yet to land a four-chair turn.

Here’s a recap of Tuesday’s show.

BEST OF THE NIGHT

Ricky Braddy, 36, Nashville, Tenn., “The Story” By Brandi Carlile: Ricky shows off nice power and range. And his voice soars on the second verse, prompting chair turns from John Legend, Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton. John called his range “exciting” and said he’d like to get him to the finale. Gwen liked the theatrical side to his voice. Blake was impressed with his range and power and the emotion in his voice. And Ricky opted to join Team Blake.

RUNNER-UP

Destiny Rayne, 23, Coral Springs, Fla., “To Make You Feel My Love” by Adele: Destiny shows off a nice tone on a soft gentle opening. But she also shows that there’s some power in that voice of hers. John Legend turns midway through the performance. Gwen Stefani joined him moments later. Gwen calls her voice “gorgeous” and liked her connection to the song. John called it a special rendition of an often heard song. Desitny decided to join Team Legend.

ON TEAM GWEN

Myracle Holloway, 44, Los Angeles, Calif., “When I Was Your Man” by Bruno Mars: Myracle opened strong and displayed a nice little quiver in her voice. But she was well into the song before Blake Shelton turned around. Gwen Stefani followed. She also delivered an impressive glory note at the end of the song, but couldn’t entice another chair turn. Blake said he was completely wrapped up in the performance and liked the way she seemed on the verge of “losing it” emotionally. Gwen said she could hear the pain in Myracle’s voice. Myracle joins Team Gwen.

ON TEAM KELLY

Damali, 16, of Norwalk, Calif., “Ocean Eyes” by Billie Eilish: The Voice seemed to cut off the beginning of her performance, but Damali delivered a couple of big glory notes. That was enough to provoke a last-second button push from Kelly Clarkson. Kelly said the last-second chair turn was strategy, so she wouldn’t have to fight to land Damali.

Steve Knill, 37, San Francisco, Calif., “Up To the Mountain” by Patty Griffin: His soulful version of the song earned an almost immediate chair turn from Kelly Clarkson. And he’s showing off all sorts of vocal gymnastics. But the coaches are being stingy with their chair turns. And, wow, Kelly is the only coach to turn, meaning Steve automatically becomes Team Kelly. John suggested his dial back the vocal gymnastics, but said he has lots of raw potential.

ON TEAM LEGEND

Khalea Lynee, “Best Part” by Daniel Caesar: Khalea’s impressive tone and range prompted quick chair turns Blake Shelton and Kelly Clarkson. John Legend soon followed. Khalea’s pitch-perfect performance eventually enticed a chair turn from Gwen Stefani as well. John complimented her on a beautiful tone and smart choices during the performance. Blake’s pitch amounted to “please pick me” and he reminded Khalea he’s worked with all types of artists. Kelly complimented her on a “killer voice.” Khalea opted to join Team Legend.
